In my opinion the worst common no-nos of new comers :
1) buying new discus fishes from everywhere and just dumping them into a stable tank of discus, without any form of quarantine.
2) Too short time for quarantine. IMO, quarantine a fishes should be at least 2-3 weeks
3) Overfeeding that causes the water to foul up badly, and further worsen the discus health. This is in fact a cycle and proportional to each other. For new discus, always feed just nice (about 5 mins) 3 times a day. Any uneaten food should be remove within an hour so that the water remain a good condition. Discus are like "spoilt kids". When conditions are not right...they will stop eating.

Chemical war.
Simply dumb the medicine A-Z into the tank when the fishes are sick. Today medicine A, 2 days later not recover, put medicine B, another 2 days not recover, Medicine C and next day, the fishes float.
How many fishes die because of sickness? I meant sick till it die, even proper treatment. How many fishes die because of old age? And how many fishes die because of improper treatment, such as misused of medicine, overdosage?

Fully agreed!! Most of my fishes not die from old age but from me itchy finger always experiment with fish treatment.

You bring up one very important issue - hearsay without verification. Verification does not mean that endorsement from any lab or any authority or any expert (Would be great if can). A verification from 3rd party opinion would be good enough.
One more thing to add on, some time newbie only listen half of the story, or only understand half of the story. At the end, it come out with some other new theory which confused many ppls. That why, verification is important, not only it will save life (the fishes) but avoid unnecessary argument and confusion.

most of us "panic" when a disease treatment doesn't give positive results after 2 days. And usually we change treatment method too quickly.
