View Full Version : I mourn for my company

Aquarian

My company has not been doing well for the past few years, retrenchments were common in order to trim the 'fat' in the company. But earlier this year, I heard that direction from the holding company is not to tender for any local project. The writing was clearly on the wall with the change in company direction and we are now forced to down sizing.

Yesterday, the news broke that some of the key personnel like Head of Division and even the whole of the tender team was made retrenched. This is obviously no longer a 'fat' trimming exercise but more like chopping off the limbs. The whole company today is plunged into sense of loss and everyone is just waiting for their names to be called.

I feel very sad for the company which I am proud to say help build from a small company to the biggest one in this region, seems like time to say goodbye is imminent, no matter how hard it is to say goodbye.

By the way, I am now actively looking for new job, anyone can help will be greatly appreciated. I will do anything. :)

What is happening here?

One said economy better than ever but never see it as good as last year. :D

Same same for my company too as we are told that we will cut cost effectively end of this march and won't renew the rental lease. Instead rent a virtual office space.

Restructured 3 people already (office manager, financial controller and sales mgr and finanical services outsources to our auditors.

So from April 1, work from home liao.

at times do take it as a new oppourtunity awaits after leaving the current job. Who knows and there are many such cases of 'out-of job' or 'retrenched' staffs turned successful bizman...or got a better pay else where....

just go for it ...and wish you good luck...:)

Bro Aquarian will be more relief to hear the following news:

SINGAPORE : The overall retrenchment rate in Singapore fell to a 12-year low last year because of favourable economic conditions, according to the Manpower Ministry's "Retrenchment and Re-employment Report 2005."

One reason the labour movement cited for the lower figure was that restructuring by companies over the last few years has bottomed out.

Said NTUC Assistant Secretary-General Halimah Yacob, "Companies have been restructuring over the last few years, particularly before the period of 2004, 2003 and before that as well. So they probably have bottomed out. It's really a situation now where they are probably consolidating and then with the economy picking up, they need workers. That is why we see a lot less retrenchment last year, but I hope this can be sustained over this year and also next year as well."

The hardest hit were production and related workers.

This group of blue-collared workers saw a higher rate of retrenchment, with 13 out of 1,000 being asked to leave last year, compared to 11 out of 1,000 in 2004.

The reason was that the manufacturing sector is seeing more layoffs, mainly in the electronics industry.

The number retrenched because of companies relocating also surged from about 1,500 in 2004 to about 4,000 last year.

But on a positive note, two out of every three retrenched last year managed to get a job within six months.

Another piece of good news is the better re-employment prospects for professionals, managers, executives and technicians.

The incidence of retrenchment for this group of workers fell to an eight-year low of 8 per 1,000 employees.

This goes to show that companies are now in the habit of retaining their experienced staff.

NTUC says the positive figures are also proof of the government's work over the years.

Said Ms Halimah, "It really shows that the government has delivered its promises that it will create jobs, it'll reduce unemployment, reduce retrenchment. In many countries, we see GDP growing but jobs are not created, unemployment is still high. So Singapore can be an exception."

Despite the positive outlook, workers are still encouraged to upgrade their skills continuously. - CNA /ct

Another Good news for bro Aquarian:

SINGAPORE : The Singapore government plans to spend about S$7.5 billion on goods and services across industries during the current fiscal year which ends in March 2007.

Construction contracts make up the bulk of the estimated spending at S$4.7 billion while other goods and services purchases will account for S$2.2 billion.

Spending on infocomm technologies is expected to hit at least S$620 million.

The tenders will cover a whole range of application and services that are expected to improve productivity in government units and to give the public easier access to government services.

The Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Education, Ministry of Home Affairs and the National Library Board are among the biggest buyers of infocomm technologies this fiscal year.

A human resource project by the Ministry of Defence alone will make up S$200 million or about one-third of expected infocomm contracts.

IDA (Infocomm Development Authority) says the estimated contractual amount is conservative but consistent with previous spending levels.

"Year to year, government spending on IT has been quite consistent. Last year, we estimated $700 million but awarded about a billion dollars. This year we are estimating about $620 million, but the actual number of tenders and the value of tenders awarded may be different. Along the course of the year, new projects may be implemented and new tenders may be called," said Chan Yeng Kit, IDA's CEO.

IDA says the S$620 million worth of IT contracts do not include a special project worth S$1.5 billion.

Called Standard ICT Operating Environment (SOE), the special project aims to standardise messaging, network and desktop systems for the public sector.

Four groups of bidders have been shortlisted for the SOE project on Tuesday.

They include a consortia led by EDS International, Hewlett-Packard Singapore, NEC Solutions Asia Pacific and a joint NCS and IBM Singapore team.

IDA expects to put out the SOE tender by the end of the year.

It expects the SOE work to begin soon after the tender is awarded by mid next year.
