Dear all, let's be more sensitive to other soccer club fans. :)

If this is Liverpool Fans Club, let's concerntrate on Liverpool related issues. Try to refrain from passing sarcastic comments. I am sure the fans here will have big heart to accept some constructive comments and some light moments. :p

It is "normal" among the soccer fans to "suan" one another especially between rival clubs, but must do it in a good spirit, sportmanship.

Don't forget we are all fish hobbyist, all the fish brothers and kaki. Don't let all these small issues affect our friendship and brotherhood here at fish-hub.com.

Real Madrid target Gerrard as 'priority' signing

Real Madrid football director Benito Floro has identified Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard as one of the Spanish club's targets as they look to build for next season.

Gerrard, 25, almost left Anfield for Chelsea last summer before changing his mind and signing a four-year deal with the club he helped win the Champions League in May.

The England international has been targeted as a 'priority' signing - as a possible long-term replacement for playmaker Zinedine Zidane - along with Inter Milan striker Adriano.

Floro told Spanish national radio station Cadena Ser: 'I've recommended (to club president Fernando Martin) as priority signings a powerful central striker like Adriano, and a top midfielder in case Zinedine Zidane leaves.

'Gerrard is the football player that I included on the list, a player that the club has already wanted to sign in previous seasons.'

Zidane has a one-year option after this season and has said he will decide if he will return to Real after the World Cup this summer.

There has been no suggestion that Gerrard would be keen to leave Anfield, but if he did move to Madrid he would link up with England captain David Beckham and defender Jonathan Woodgate. Former Liverpool team-mate Michael Owen spent a year at the Bernabeu before joining Newcastle last summer.

Floro also suggested Getafe coach Bernd Schuster as a possible candidate to replace coach Juan Roman Lopez Caro.

Schuster, a former Germany international who played for both Real and Barcelona, has been praised for the job he has done with Madrid minnows Getafe, who are mid-table in the Primera Liga.

'Schuster's name was included in the report because in the case that Lopez Caro does not continue, I believe it was important to include a coach that knows Spanish football,' Floro added.

Sven-Goran Eriksson and Rafael Benitez, the former Valencia coach who is now in charge at Liverpool, have previously been named by Madrid as candidates to take over.

GERRARD: NOW LET'S GO AND WIN THE CUP

Paul Eaton 22 April 2006

Steven Gerrard reflected on Liverpool's brilliant semi-final victory over Chelsea and declared: "Now let's go and win the Cup." Goals in each half from John Arne Riise and Luis Garcia were enough to send the Reds through to the final where they will face the winners of Sunday's clash between Middlesbrough and West Ham United.

Gerrard was thrilled with the spirit his team-mates showed to secure a famous victory, but he has warned it will count for nothing if they don't now go on to win the final.

He said: "This job isn't done yet. We've another massive game to play on May 13 and we've got to go and win this Cup now. It's going to be another tough game but if we perform as we can then we can win it.

"I thought we deserved our victory over Chelsea. We were the better side in the first half, in fact I think we were better for the first hour.

"Then the onslaught came and we were expecting it because they are a class side. It was disappointing to concede a goal because that made the job even harder, but we hung in there.

"We were all feeling it at the end when we went into added time but the rallying call came from Carra that we all had to stick together."

RAFA: THIS WIN IS FOR OUR FANS
Steve Hunter 22 April 2006

Rafael Benitez praised the efforts of his players after they beat Chelsea 2-1 to reach the FA Cup Final and dedicated the victory to the fantastic Liverpool Supporters.

The Liverpool manager felt the support of the Liverpool fans inspired his players to victory over Chelsea.

"I must say credit to my players and offer this victory to our supporters, this victory was for them," Benitez enthused.

"They are amazing our supporters always and they supported us all of the game. We controlled the game for 60 minutes against a good team with good players but we have good players as well and we are in the final.

"My players have done a fantastic job and we have showed people that we can beat Chelsea. The commitment of our players is amazing and that for me was the key to our victory."

It is the first time Gerrard has won the prestigous award

Gerrard receives top PFA honour

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has claimed the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year award.

Gerrard won the Young Player of the Year award in 2001 and that went to Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney for the second year in a row.

The awards are voted for by Gerrard's fellow footballers and he said: "I am still in shock to be honest.

"To go through to another FA Cup final and win this special award is fantastic for me."

Gerrard beat off strong competition from Arsenal striker Thierry Henry, Chelsea trio Joe Cole, Frank Lampard and John Terry, who won last year, and Rooney.

The Liverpool and England playmaker was third in last season's vote but then went on to guide the Reds to Champions League victory against AC Milan in Istanbul.

Gerrard revealed that he had voted for Henry and England team-mate Rooney.

The Manchester United star, still only 20, said he was pleased to again pick up the young player prize.

"To win it twice on the run is a great honour and I am delighted with the award," Rooney said.

He beat off competition from Charlton striker Darren Bent, team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, Tottenham's Aaron Lennon, Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas and West Ham defender Anton Ferdinand.

Rooney added: "I voted for Fabregas, but it was close between him and Darren Bent."

It was no surprise that champions Chelsea had the most players named in the Premiership Team of the Year in the shape of John Terry, William Gallas, Joe Cole and Frank Lampard.

Newcastle's Shay Given was picked between the sticks while Wigan full-back Pascal Chimbonda was also included after a solid season for Paul Jewell's side.

Benitez got the better of his Chelsea counterpart Mourinho

Benitez shrugs off Mourinho snub

Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez says Chelsea counterpart Jose Mourinho did not want to shake hands with him after their FA Cup semi-final.

The Reds beat Chelsea 2-1 in their 10th meeting in two seasons.

"I was with our supporters at the end and I could see him but he didn't want to," said Benitez.

"At least we showed the people we can beat them. They have a lot of good players but we do too. We have a great team spirit."

He added: "We are in the final. My players have done a fantastic job."

The Reds contained Chelsea's threat for the first hour of the game as John Arne Riise and Luis Garcia put Liverpool ahead.

But substitute Arjen Robben was shortly followed on to the pitch by Joe Cole and Damien Duff for the Blues, who desperately tried to equalise after Didier Drogba had pulled a goal back for them.

"Chelsea are one of the most expensive teams in the world and they have a lot of good players," said Benitez.

"They played well and we were trying to control them but it is really difficult to control Duff, Cole, Lampard and Drogba and all the players that they have."

The Reds boss is now looking forward to savouring the victory over Chelsea and then trying to win his first FA Cup final at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium on 13 May.

"I am really happy and delighted for the players, the club and the supporters. It was an amazing game for us," he stated.

"The big clubs are always thinking about winning the big trophies and we are in the most famous Cup in the world. It is really important for us to win."

HENRY: GERRARD'S AN INSPIRATION
Paul Eaton 25 April 2006

Thierry Henry basked in the glory of Arsenal securing a place in the Champions League final - and immediately hailed Steven Gerrard as being an inspiration to everyone at Highbury.

Arsene Wenger's men will face either Barcelona or AC Milan in Paris next month after a goalless draw with Villareal saw them progress 1-0 on aggregate.

Speaking immediately after the match in Spain, the Arsenal skipper was keen to pay tribute to Gerrard and congratulate the Liverpool midfielder on being named PFA Player of the Year at the weekend.

"What Steven Gerrard did last year in the Champions League has been an inspiration to us all," said Henry.

"I am so pleased he has been named Player of the Year. It's been a long time coming for him. I have so much respect for the guy and I want to congratulate him."

Some extracts from Soccernet:

"Hayden Mullins and Luis Garcia are almost certain to miss the FA Cup final after both players were sent off for violent conduct nine minutes from time in Liverpool's Premiership victory over West Ham."

"A dismissal for violent conduct carries an automatic three-match suspension which both players who complete when the two sides meet again in Cardiff on May 13. "

"West Ham manager Alan Pardew and Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez have pleaded with the Football Association to show 'sympathy' and 'common sense' and allow red-carded pair Hayden Mullins and Luis Garcia to play in the FA Cup final."

"'The referee said he thought about [the yellow card] but under the guidelines he's given he would be punished if he didn't give two reds."

"Liverpool enjoy a strength in depth that West Ham do not and the loss of Mullins will be a major blow to the Hammers."

CROUCH: WE'LL GIVE THE HAMMERS TOTAL RESPECT
Paul Eaton 12 May 2006

Peter Crouch has insisted Liverpool will be taking nothing for granted when they clash with West Ham in tomorrow's FA Cup final.

The Reds are overwhelming favourites to win their seventh FA Cup, but the Liverpool striker has enough respect for the Hammers to declare they could cause a massive upset if the Reds don't perform on the day.

"We have to be professional, it is my first FA Cup final as well and I want a winner's medal," he said.

"One of the reasons I came to Liverpool was to be part of a club that win things, and challenge for things every season. This is the start for me and I want to look back on fond memories and winner's medals. This I hope will be one of them.

"People are saying that we are European champions and third in the league with a big squad and the money, so that should mean we will beat West Ham.

"But that is not the case, credit to West Ham, they have been superb this season and a lot of people think that with teams coming up from the Championship they will automatically be involved in the relegation battle.

"That has never been the case for West Ham. And that's a credit to Alan Pardew and credit to their players.

"We know how dangerous they can be and we are certainly not taking anything for granted. We have beaten Manchester United and Chelsea to get this far so we have gone about it the hard way, and now we must be professional in the final."

WEST HAM UNITED 4 - 6 LIVERPOOL
Saturday 13 May 2006 15:00 , FA Cup Final
CUP JOY FOR REDS

Liverpool have won the FA Cup for a 7th time after Pepe Reina saved three of West Ham's penalties after a stoppage time goal from Steven Gerrard had made it 3-3 and taken the game into extra time and then penalties.

Reina was the hero as he stopped penalties from Zamora, Konchesky and Ferdinand and successful penalties for Dietmar Hamann, Steven Gerrard and John Arne Riise gave the Reds the win.

It had looked they would suffer cup heartache after West Ham had taken a 3-2 lead midway through the second half, but Steven Gerrard pulled them back from the brink with a superb 35 yard drive in stoppage time.

There was good news for the Reds prior to kick off when Xabi Alonso was passed fit to start in this the 125th FA Cup Final. Alonso had been a doubt after picking up an injury last Sunday at Portsmouth, but his availability meant that Rafa had more options and was able to deploy Steven Gerrard on the right side of midfield.

It was Liverpool who made most of the early running and we'd had only a minute when Gerrard's surging run down the right brought a rash tackle and a free kick for the Reds in a dangerous position. Nothing was to come of that, but the Reds continued to press and a cross from Gerrard just minutes later caused a moment of panic in the West Ham defence.

The Hammers responded with a run and shot from Marlon Harewood, but Liverpool were quickly back on the attack and a foul on Gerrard lead to a free kick from Riise that needed a brave block from a West Ham defender.

West Ham were slowly working their way into the game and they began to cause Liverpool problems. And they gave the Reds a real problem when in the 20th minute they took the lead courtesy of an own goal from Jamie Carragher. It came when Scaloni broke free on the right and in trying to clear his low cross, Carragher put through his own net.

The Reds were rocked and hopes of a 7th FA Cup success seemed to be evaporating when West Ham made it 2-0 through Dean Ashton in the 28th minute. Ashton getting his chance to score from close in after Reina had only been able to parry Etherington's shot.

Liverpool needed to respond and that they did when Djibril Cisse pulled a goal back in the 32nd minute. It was Cisse's 19th goal of the season and he won't have scored many better or more important than when he lashed the ball past Hislop from Gerrard's deep cross.

The Reds came out for the second half with thoughts of an equalizer, but they had a superb double stop from Pepe Reina to thank for keeping them in the game in the 46th minute. It seemed inevitable Harewood would score has he shot from point blank range, but Reina saved and then got up to stop Benayoun's follow up.

It proved to be a pivotal moment in the game because we then had Liverpool's best spell of the game and they got themselves level with a brilliant goal from Steven Gerrard. It came in the 54th minute after Gerrard steamed in to smash in Morientes' knock down.

The Reds scented victory, but they would have their hard work was undone in the 64th minute when Paul Konchesky made it 3-2 to West Ham. It's unlikely Konchesky was intending to do anything but cross the ball, but the flight of the ball beat Reina and went in at the far post.

You wondered if Liverpool could comeback again and as the clock ticked down it looked unlikely. But just when it looked like West Ham would win the cup, Steven Gerrard produced a moment of absolute magic with a 90th minute equalizer.

Gerrard must have been fully 35 yards out when he smashed a half volley past Shaka Hislop. It must be one of the best goals ever seen in the FA Cup. Liverpool had a lifeline and we headed into extra time.

Extra time was largely dominated by the Reds, but as hard as they tried they just couldn't avoid penalties. Riise, Hyypia, Kromkamp and Morientes all went close to winning it for the Reds in extra time, but we would have to endure dreaded penalties to find out the winner of the FA Cup. That wasn't before Liverpool suffered another scare though when Harewood headed against the crossbar.

Liverpool by now are used to high pressure shoot outs, but it doesn't make them any more bearable. But Pepe Reina eased the nerves of Reds fans by saving three of West Ham's four penalties to take the cup to Anfield.

What a season it's been. Liverpool can sign off knowing it's been hugely successful.

As the dust settles on the most dramatic FA Cup Final of all-time there has been contrasting news for several of Liverpool's World Cup hopefuls.
Five are today continuing their celebrations after discovering they are definitely off to the World Cup this summer but there was disappointment for two.

Amid the frantic celebrations that have followed Saturday's thrilling penalty shoot-out victory over West Ham in Cardiff on Sunday Jan Kromkamp, Djibril Cisse, Luis Garcia, Xabi Alonso and Pepe Reina have all been assured of their plane ticket to Germany.

Kromkamp was named in Marco Van Basten's Holland squad, Cisse takes his place in France's 23-man party, while Spanish trio Garcia, Alonso and Reina have been given the nod by Luis Aragones.

But there was bad news for Fernando Morientes who failed to make Spain's final cut, despite having figured in several recent squads, and Jerzy Dudek who has been left out of the Poland squad.

Last week, Harry Kewell was named in Australia's squad, while Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher and Peter Crouch were included in England's 23.

John Arne Riise has been included in the Norway squad for two forthcoming friendly internationals. Riise will be hoping to add to the 51 caps he's already won for his country when Norway play Paraguay on 24 May and South Korea on 1 June.

XABI JOINS THE GONZALEZ FAN CLUB
Mark Platt 18 May 2006

Xabi Alonso has today joined club captain Steven Gerrard in revealing his excitement about the imminent Anfield arrival of Mark Gonzalez.
Barring any more problems with his work permit application, Gonzalez will join the Reds for the start of pre-season training in July.

The speedy Chilean winger spent the latter part of last season on loan at Alonso's old club Real Sociedad.

And after speaking to his brother, Mikel, who also plays for Sociedad, Alonso is confident Liverpool have got themselves a top-class performer.

"My brother told me Mark was playing very well in Spain and everyone was really excited about him," says Alonso.

"I spoke to him a lot before the end of the season because I was really concerned about the team's position in the table, but they did well to reach a safe position and were very happy with Mark.

"Mark made it clear how much he was looking forward to coming to play for Liverpool, but he really enjoyed his time with Real Sociedad and was happy for the chance to play every week, especially after being injured for six months.

"It was good news for him, Real Sociedad and Liverpool that he played so well there."

MORIENTES LEAVES FOR VALENCIA Paul Eaton 25 May 2006

Liverpool have this evening confirmed that striker Fernando Morientes has joined Valencia for an undisclosed fee.
The Spanish striker didn't manage to live up to his reputation during his sixteen months on Merseyside and managed just 12 goals in 61 games for the Reds.

He was left out of the Spanish squad for this summer's World Cup after failing to play a major role in the Liverpool first team last season.

Everybody at Liverpool FC would like to wish Nando all the best with his new club in Spain.

GONZALEZ: I JUST WANT TO PLAY FOR LIVERPOOL

Paul Eaton 25 May 2006

Mark Gonzalez today spoke of his dream of winning his battle for a work permit and turning out as a Liverpool player next season.
Gonzalez turned in an impressive performance for Chile last night in their 1-0 friendly victory over Republic of Ireland and he's now keeping his fingers crossed that the Reds succeed in their new application to bring him to the Premiership in time for the new campaign.

"I'll be going back to train again but I've got to wait for my work permit," Gonzalez said. "They have had to loan me to Real Sociedad until my work permit comes through but everything is going well at the moment and I have had a lot of support off Rafa.

"I couldn't watch the FA Cup final but I was very happy when I had found out we had won. I was delighted when they told me Liverpool had won the cup and now I just want to play as soon as possible.

"It has been my dream for a long time to play in the Premiership and now it is so close. The only thing I want to do now is play for Liverpool. It is all that I have been thinking about.

"It has been frustrating with the work permit and we still have to wait but hopefully everything will be normal in my case. I just want to play for Liverpool as soon as possible."

RAFA AND HIS NEW REDS

Rafa Benitez has confirmed the signings of three new players this week - and here are the first pictures of each of them in training at Melwood.
The Liverpool boss has been busy strengthening his squad for an assault on next season's Premiership title and, along with the high profile capture of Craig Bellamy from Blackburn, he's been quick to bring in further additions from all over the world.

On Tuesday the Reds' completed the signing of Argentinain defender Gabriel Paletta from Banfield, with Benitez predicting he could become an inspirational leader in the Jamie Carragher mould.

And yesterday was a day of double celebration at the club as Fabio Aurelio became the first Brazilian to sign for the Reds and Mark Gonzalez finally got the green light to begin his Liverpool career after the Reds' secured a work permit for the Chilean international.

Here are the first snaps of each of our latest recruits in training action at Melwood this week.

Another good decision:

Cisse completes Marseille loan switch

Rafael Benitez marked the end of French striker Djibril Cisse's career at Liverpool by revealing that he wanted 'a different style of player up front'.

And the Anfield boss also maintained that after Cisse suffered two broken legs, a return to the French league with Marseille would be the best way for the player to regain full match fitness.

Benitez unveiled two of his South American imports - Fabio Aurelio and Gabriel Paletta - as Cisse's Liverpool career drew to a close, while veteran midfielder Dietmar Hamann completed a move to Manchester City.

But it is the departure of Cisse, Liverpool's record signing at £14million two years ago, which has caused the most discussion.

The international finished second top scorer last season and his final Liverpool goal was a crucial one in the FA Cup final victory over West Ham.

But Cisse has now joined Marseille on a season-long loan with a potential £8million transfer at the end of it, having been forced to sit out the World Cup with another fractured leg.

Benitez, with £6million Craig Bellamy now on board, sees the Welshman as a direct replacement for the erratic Cisse, and said: 'We have an agreement for a season loan with Marseille for Cisse.

'It is the best option for him, because after two broken legs maybe it will be more difficult for him now in the English league.

'Now we have (Peter) Crouch, (Robbie) Fowler and Bellamy and that would have made it difficult for him to get matches to regain his fitness levels.

'We wanted more pace, a different sort of striker who would score a different type of goal. Bellamy will give us that.

'Cisse played a lot of games and I am not the kind of manager who does not use players bought by previous managers.

'I use the best for my team, and I used Cisse when I wanted pace, but I wanted something different to take us forward.'...............................

GERRARD RETURNS IN DEFIANT TITLE TALKING MOOD

Steven Gerrard marked his first day back in pre-season training by outlining his aspirations to end Liverpool's long wait for the Premiership title.
Having enjoyed a prolonged summer break due to his involvement in the World Cup the Liverpool skipper returned to club duty in determined mood.

Speaking at the launch of the Reds' new Adidas kit, Gerrard spoke of his burning desire to lift more trophies and warned rival clubs that Liverpool fear no-one.

He says: "It would be really nice to finish this season on another good note, just like have done in the previous seasons. Another trophy in the cabinet is a must, as is continued improvement in the league.

"We have to believe we can win the Premiership. It's going to be difficult but we have to get ourselves involved in that title race. We have respect for the likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United but we don't fear them.

"We have the players to improve. The boss has strengthened the squad and I'm sure he'll add to it again before the start of the season, so that bodes well. We've just got to have confidence in our own ability and belief that we can do it.

"There are a lot of players in the Liverpool dressing room, myself included, who are only missing a Premiership medal from their collection. We'd love to put that right and I'm sure everyone will be pulling in the same direction to achieve this. I'd just love to lift that Premiership trophy above my head.

"Winning the Champions League and FA Cup were both unforgettable experiences and it's nice to see those trophies in the cabinet but you can't speak about glory days at Liverpool until the title has been won again, again and again, plus more and more other trophies. You won't get anyone here speaking about glory days until this is the case."

Despite playing almost non-stop for 12 months Gerrard insists he's raring to go ahead of the new campaign and dismissed thoughts he'd be suffering from tiredness.

"I've had a three week rest and that is enough for anyone. I enjoyed a couple of holidays, spent a lot of time with my family and I'm feeling good. I just can't wait to get playing football again. I'm itching for it because that's what I get paid to do.

"Obviously I have still got some painful memories from Germany but as a player you have to look forward and the idea now is to have a good season for Liverpool."

Aquarian
25-07-2006, 12:05 PM
While Gerrard has been away four new faces have been added to the Anfield ranks and the skipper admits he's impressed with the quality that Rafael Benitez has brought in.

"I'm really excited by the signings we've made so far. Obviously, the one I know most about is Craig Bellamy because I've come up against him many times. He was a nightmare to play against so I'm glad to have him on side. He's a really quick player with fantastic ability. He'll now be playing in a better side than he has done in the past and I'm sure we're going to see the best of him.

"He's capable of scoring lots of goals and it's my responsibility as a midfielder to provide him with chances. He's also a great character and that is what we need here. I know there's a lot said about Craig off the pitch but that doesn't interest me. I'm only interested in how he does on the pitch and I'm sure he's going to have a good Liverpool career."

Gerrard also had some words of encouragement for two other Liverpool strikers at opposite ends of their career path.

"I was delighted to see Craig Lindfield get off the mark on Saturday. I was really impressed with him during last season's Youth Cup run and I'm not surprised to see him being handed a first team opportunity. He's a good player with a big future and it's nice to see a local lad get a chance.

"Let's also not forget about Robbie Fowler. I hear he's been looking sharp since the start of pre-season and I've no doubt he will score a lot of goals in the coming season."

On Liverpool's new Adidas kit, the club captain added: "It's really nice, very smart and feels good on. The three stripes on the arm remind me of the glory days of the eighties when the likes of John Barnes and Steve McMahon were in their prime. Hopefully it can inspire us to similar success."

REINA THE MIDFIELDER CAN'T SAVE REDS

Liverpool might have missed out on the city's comedy festival while staying at a pre-season camp in Switzerland, but Rafael Benitez clearly entered into the spirit of fun by playing Pepe Reina as a midfielder during a 3-2 defeat to FC Kaiserslautern.

With the game level at 2-2 after Craig Bellamy had scored his second goal in three games and Luis Garcia had given the Reds a brief lead, Benitez found himself short of available players and decided to throw on the Spanish goalkeeper as a makeshift midfielder.

While the crowd of 2,800 in Liechtenstein couldn't believe what they were seeing, Reina twice went close to grabbing the winner before Marcel Ziemer subjected Liverpool to their first pre-season defeat of the new campaign with an 87th minute strike.

Having been a goal down early in the second half, Liverpool looked to have won the game until two late strikes swung the game in Kaiserslautern's favour.

With fitness the only real concern of Benitez at this stage of pre-season, you can't imagine the Liverpool will lose much sleep over Saturday night's result.

Breakdown
1 min : Robbie Fowler and Craig Bellamy kick the game off inside the Sportpark Eschen Mauren with Rafael Benitez giving youngsters Lee Peltier, Paul Anderson, Jack Hobbs and Gabriel Paletta another chance to prove their worth during pre-season. While new signing Jermaine Pennant had to be content with a place on the bench, there is a first start for Chile international Mark Gonzalez.
8 mins : Liverpool keep looking to bring Anderson and Gonzalez into the game and when Hyypia finds the former Hull midfielder out wide on the wing, it marks Liverpool's best move of the game so far.
12 mins : Djimi Traore wins Liverpool's first corner of the game but the set-piece taken by Gonzalez fails to find Hyypiain the six yard box.
17 mins : The game desperately needs a goal to bring some life into the match. Liverpool look the most likely to grab that goal but so far, there is very little to report in terms of actual chances with neither 'keeper yet to be called into action.

22 mins : A good move involving Anderson, Hyypia, Zenden and Peltier breaks down on the right wing when Anderson just fails to keep the ball in play after some neat pass and move play. If Liverpool are to break the deadlock, it looks like the goal might come from the right side of play.
30 mins : With half an hour gone, Liverpool record their first real attempt on goal. Bolo Zenden is the man who takes the long-distance shot but the ball sails over Jurgen Macho's goal.
46 mins : Substitution: Jermaine Pennant for Paul Anderson:
46 mins : Substitution: John Arne Riise for Mark Gonzalez:
46 mins : Substitution: Steve Finnan for Sami Hyypia:
46 mins : Craig Bellamy smashes a brilliant shot against the bar after a great ball in from Steve Finnan.
46 mins : Substitution: Fabio Aurelio for Gabriel Paletta:
47 mins : TV replays prove Bellamy's shot actually crossed the line. Unfortunately for Liverpool, the linesman didn't see it.
51 mins : Great run from Pennant down the right wing and after beating two players, he finally wins a corner. His pace is already causing the Germans a few problems and he's only been on the pitch for six minutes.
53 mins : Robbie Fowler, playing in a deep role, find Bellamy with a great pass but the Welsh international's shot is well caught by Macho.
54 mins : Substitution: Ricardo Villar for Sven Muller:
56 mins : GOAL! Ricardo Villar: Villar takes advantage of a mistake by Hobbs to slide the ball past Dudek into the net
56 mins : Substitution: Luis Garcia for Robbie Fowler:
60 mins : GOAL! Craig Bellamy: Immediate response from the Reds as Garcia sets up Bellamy for a close range equaliser
65 mins : With 25 minutes remaining, Liverpool are increasing the pressure on the Germans and a second goal doesn't look too far away.

71 mins : GOAL! Marcel Ziemer: Another mistake from Hobbs gives Ziener a chance which he converts to level the scores
46 mins : Substitution: Jermaine Pennant for Paul Anderson:
73 mins : Luis Garcia leaves the pitch after picking up a knock and is soon to be replaced by Robbie Fowler - who was replaced by Garcia earlier in the second half.
79 mins : Substitution: Pepe Reina for Luis Garcia:
80 mins : 2,800 fans here can still not believe what they're seeing on the pitch as Pepe Reina continues to play in central midfield for the first time in his Liverpool career. All we need now is for the goalkeeper to grab the winner!
82 mins : Reina almost scores with a low shot inside the box but his strike is just wide of the post.
86 mins : Reina fires over the bar from inside the box after finding some space inside the box.
87 mins : GOAL! Marcel Ziemer: Ziemer nets his second as he gets in behind the defence and lofts the ball into the net

Rafael Benitez is delighted with the start Craig Bellamy has made to his Liverpool career - but he's warned the Welsh striker not to burn himself out on the training pitch before the season gets underway.
Bellamy has netted two goals in the Reds' opening three pre-season matches and will be looking to add to his tally when Liverpool travel to Zurich to meet Grasshoppers this evening.

But it's the Welsh striker's work on the training field which has so far impressed his new manager as he sets about convincing Benitez he is worthy of a place once the competitive action gets underway.

"I knew what the player was like, but it's always different when you see the player every day," said the Reds' boss. "He is working really well, doing everything with a high tempo.

"Sometimes you need to say to him 'hey, try to control your energy. We have a long way to go'.

"But I am really pleased to see him training because he has ability, pace and passion.

"He is a player who has said before he is a Liverpool fan and you can see that he wants to play well, not for me or to impress me, but because he likes to do this."

Benitez has also admitted he has been pleased with the early season form of Gabriel Paletta, who has turned in a succession of eye-catching performances at the heart of the Reds' defence.

"In the pre-season he needs to play because we want to use the players a lot and see how he progresses," he said.

"But the first thing for me is the adaptation to the style of life and language and everything.

"But on the pitch he can tackle, he is an English player in terms of the style - but for sure he needs to improve and to be settled down. It's not easy."

Rafael Benitez was full of praise for goal scoring hero Mark Gonzalez after the 2-1 win over Maccabi Haifa but warned his players there is still a lot of hard work to be done in the second leg.
The Liverpool manager said the goal will give Gonzalez a lot of confidence and felt the team needed that moment of inspiration to give them a victory to take into the second and deciding leg.

"It was a good situation for us to see Mark Gonzalez score and it was fantastic for him and the team," enthused Benitez.

"Mark is a player with a lot of quality. He can score goals as we saw tonight and he can also beat players.

"It was also important for Craig Bellamy to score on his debut and we must be pleased with the win. Gonzalez and Bellamy give us more possibilities to score goals.

"We knew this would be a difficult game as they have quality players and play a good counter attack. In the first half we didn't create a lot of clear chances but in the second half we were much better as we regained more second balls and had more possibilities.

"I wouldn't say we are now favourites to go through but I think we will be better in the second leg as they now have to come out and attack us so hopefully we will have more space. We have a little advantage and we will be a lot fitter."

GONZALEZ GRABS A LATE, LATE WINNER

Liverpool moved a step closer to Champions League qualification on Wednesday night after recording their 13th successive win in competitive competitions by beating Maccabi Haifa 2-1 at Anfield.

Debut strikes in either half from Craig Bellamy - cancelling out a shock opener from Gustavo Boccoli - and substitute Mark Gonzalez in the 88th minute were enough to see Liverpool clinch an absolutely essential victory at what is effectively half-time in this two-legged encounter.

While Rafael Benitez will be unhappy to have seen his side give away a vital goal on home soil, he'll at least be thankful that Haifa No.9 Roberto Colautti somehow managed to direct a powerful header from six yards out just inches wide of Pepe Reina's post with the scores still at 1-1.

It was a heart-stopping moment during the second half that merely confirmed why both Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher had given Haifa a pre-match billing of the toughest side Liverpool have had to face at this stage of the tournament.

Haifa had earlier carved out a first-half lead against the run of play thanks to a clinical low finish from the Brazilian midfielder Boccoli - one of only five foreigners allowed to play for Haifa “ after he'd raced clear of the Liverpool defence to slot the ball beyond Reina.

With Liverpool determined not to let the visitors go into the break with their tails up, Bellamy's leveller couldn't have come at a better time. After Nir Davidovitch had saved a low shot from Momo Sissoko, the former Blackburn striker was in the right place at the right time to side foot the ball into the net from a tight angle.

While Jamie Carragher joined the late Emlyn Hughes on 79 European appearances for the club and Sami Hyypia notched up his 50th European Cup game (second only to Phil Neal in the Anfield record books), the Liverpool goalscorer was making his European debut in Red alongside fellow new boy and Man of the Match, Jermaine Pennant.

With both Robbie Fowler and Brazilian Fabio Aurelio ruled out with injury, Benitez “ enjoying his 30th European Cup game as Liverpool manager - chose to play John Arne Riise at left-back with Steven Gerrard supporting Bellamy in attack.

It was a formation that almost payed off after just 35 seconds when Gerrard flicked a back-header into the path of the former Blackburn striker in the area only for the Haifa 'keeper Nir Davidovitch to win the race to the ball.

condor
10-08-2006, 10:15 AM
In the end it was Sissoko and not Gerrard who helped set up Bellamy's goal, but despite the introduction of Peter Crouch, Mark Gonzalez and Luis Garcia “ who had a good shout for a penalty waved away inside the final 10 minutes “ it appeared that Liverpool just wouldn't be able to build upon the equaliser.

Enter Gonzalez. The Chilean winger was thrown on in place of Gerrard with just five minutes remaining and within three, he'd grabbed a sensational winner after a close range finish into the top corner. As five minute debuts go, it'll take some beating.

REDS CLINCH FIRST SILVERWARE OF THE SEASON

Liverpool issued an ominous warning to their Premiership rivals in Cardiff this afternoon with a well-deserved 2-1 victory over champions Chelsea in the 2006 Community Shield.

Peter Crouch headed home the winning goal ten minutes from time at the Millennium Stadium to clinch the first silverware of the season.

John Arne Riise had earlier given the Reds a 9th minute lead with a tremendous solo effort only for Andriy Shevchenko to level matters on the stroke of half-time with a well-taken strike.

The game looked to be heading towards a penalty-shoot-out until Crouch's far post nod past Carlo Cudicini sent the travelling Liverpudlian hordes wild with delight as the vastly outnumbered Chelsea contingent sat in stunned silence.

Goals from Dirk Kuyt and Jermaine Pennant have given Liverpool a richly deserved 2-0 half time lead over Chelsea in today's Premiership clash at Anfield.
The Reds flew at Chelsea from the first whistle and they were ahead inside four minutes when Carragher's pass found its way to Kuyt and he outwitted Ferreira before finishing superbly beyond Petr Cech.

It took a fine save from Cech to prevent Riise making it 2-0 in the 6th minute, but there was to be no respite for Jose Mourinho's men because Jermaine Pennant did make it 2-0 with a superb 18th minute goal, his first for the club.

It came when Essien could only half clear Gerrard's cross and when the ball fell to Pennant on the right edge of the penalty area, he hit a stunning half volley that gave the Chelsea goalkeeper no chance.

Chelsea came into the game when a facial injury to Xabi Alonso meant he had to return to the dressing room for treatment, but he's back on and Liverpool are well worth their lead at the break.

Maybe it is a case of sour grapes? Anyway, we shall try to proof him wrong

From Soccernet

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson thinks that Livepool have little chance of beating Italian giants AC Milan in the Champions League final at the end of May.

Milan beat United in the semi-finals to set up a repeat of the 2005 final in Istanbul, which Liverpool won on penalties.

Ferguson told the Sun: 'I'd bet for sure that Milan will win the Champions League. I'm absolutely certain of it.

'I told their manager Carlo Ancelotti at the end of our semi-final that there is no way he cannot win it now.'

Ferguson plans to toast Milan's victory with a bottle of wine given to him by Ancelotti after his side had lost in Italy.

'Carlo gave me a magnificent bottle of wine,' Ferguson added. 'But I immediately told him I would only drink his wine once I see him lifting the Champions Cup.'

The United boss admits his side were outclassed by Milan at the San Siro in their 3-0 defeat, but also blamed tiredness after their Premiership exertions for their European exit.

'Milan's second-leg victory over us was stupendous, fantastic and extraordinary,' Ferguson said.

'But I know we paid a high price for the Premiership fightback which we needed at Everton to turn a 2-0 scoreline into a 4-2 victory.

'Last week, Milan were fresher and better prepared tactically and physically.

'I'm still trying to analyse the factors involved. But the truth remains we faced one of the best performances in the history of AC Milan.'

Bro Aquarian is gona hate this:

LONDON, June 3 (Reuters) - Liverpool supporters have been identified as the worst behaved at European matches in a report to be handed by UEFA to the British Government in Brussels on Tuesday.

The report, which has been compiled by undercover police agents from a neutral European force over the last four years, will be given by UEFA president Michel Platini to British sports minister Richard Caborn.

UEFA spokesman William Gaillard told Reuters: 'The incidents involving Liverpool fans have been well known to us before the trouble at the Champions League final which involved Liverpool fans last week.

'That was just the latest example. What other set of fans steal tickets from their fellow supporters or out of the hands of children? We know what happened in Athens, and Liverpool fans were the cause of most of the trouble there.

'There have been 25 incidents involving Liverpool fans away from home since 2003 and these are in the report -- most teams' supporters do not cause any trouble at all.'

Problems occurred at the Champions League final when fans with forged tickets and even without any ticket gained entry to the Olympic Stadium for the match against AC Milan, while dozens of fans with genuine tickets were refused entry.

When Liverpool fans did try to gain entry the situation threatened to escalate out of control and the Greek police fired tear gas and used batons.

Liverpool have submitted their own report to UEFA which criticises the security arrangements for the final.

Gaillard added: 'You must ask yourself why at the same match, with the same conditions, there was no trouble with the Milan fans - only the Liverpool fans.'

Liverpool fans were held responsible for the disaster at the 1985 European Cup final at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels when 39 mainly Italian fans died after a wall collapsed following a charge by Liverpool fans before the match against Juventus.

The tragedy led to English clubs being banned from European competition for five years.

LFC 1-2 BARNSLEY: THE REPORT

Liverpool have crashed out of the FA Cup following an injury time stunner from Barnsley captain Brian Howard.

The 25-yard winner came after Stephen Foster levelled Dirk Kuyt's first-half opener.

Benitez's side now have just the Champions League in their sights if 2007-08 is to end in glory.

The Reds will now have to pick themselves up for the arrival of Italy's runaway leaders, Inter Milan - and they'll have to play better than they did against a team lying 14th in the English Championship.

Liverpool might still be in the FA Cup had numerous chances not once again gone begging.

A low drive from John Arne Riise, a tame chest and volley from Kuyt and a Peter Crouch header which dropped harmlessly wide - all within the first 12 minutes.

Next Dutch duo Ryan Babel and Kuyt combined well before teeing up Lucas for what turned out to be a blaze over.

Yossi Benayoun was taking up some great positions and it was his movement that created a decent chance for Crouch on 18 minutes. The big man controlled well after receiving the ball 10 yards from goal but his shot was palmed away well by Barnsley debutant Luke Steele.

Still the chances continued to be wasted. Babel was next to have a pop after beating his man in the box, but his effort was too close to the keeper.

Then, a scare at the other end when Hyypia lingered on the ball and allowed Daniel Nardiello through on goal. Thankfully, with 6,000 away fans glaring down at him from the Anfield Road, the Welshman had a rush of blood to the head.

Back at the Kop end Xabi Alonso, who required stitches during his 150th Liverpool appearance following a clash of heads with Lucas, forced a fine diving save out of Steele with a curler from 25 yards.

A lot has been said about the importance of scoring the first goal recently, and it finally came on 32 minutes after great wingplay down the left from Babel.

The number 18 left his man for dead before pulling back to Kuyt, who couldn't miss from close range after losing marker Stephen Foster. The striker's right-footed tap-in was his first goal since early December.

But if Anfield thought the floodgates would now open, they were wrong. Just one more chance of note came before the interval, Crouch getting on the end of a decent cross from the right before asking a question of the excellent Steele.

Babel set about causing more havoc down the left with a couple of weaving runs straight from the restart. The only damaged caused, however, was to Bobby Hassell's chances of becoming a father after a ferocious strike into the defender's crown jewels.

Fortunately for him, his teammates were about to deliver a perfect tonic. Slapdash defending allowed Anderson De Silva to swing in a wicked ball from the right, which Stephen Foster redirected beyond the despairing hands of Charles Itandje.

Here we go again, thought the home faithful. If only they knew.

Liverpool were immediately presented with a gilt-edged chance to restore their lead, but first Benayoun and then Crouch contrived to miss when it seemed easier to find the net.

Another inviting opportunity fell to Hyypia minutes later after Barnsley failed to deal with a well-flighted corner. The subsequent block prompted groans of frustration from the Kop.

A Lucas header tipped onto the bar, Benayoun firing a low shot wide after evading countless challenged. Fingernails were doubtless at a premium among the 4,000 Tykes watching on a big screen back at Oakwell.

The Yorkshiremen were being forced deeper and deeper, though the occasional counter-attack hinted at what was to come. Jamal Campbell-Ryce forced Itandje into hasty challenge which, on another day, could have resulted in an early bath.

Crouch skewed another golden opportunity while substitute Harry Kewell was unlucky to have a fine volley tipped over. Still the side that lost 3-0 to Plymouth on Tuesday hung on.

More heroics were around the corner as Hassell went from aching balls to golden balls with last-ditch tackle to deny Kuyt.

Then it happened. On 93 minutes. Barnsley got the winner through captain and top scorer Howard, who, after being denied a legitimate penalty, beat the unfortunate Itandje with a 25-yard volley.

Afterwards, visiting manager Simon Davey attributed the winner to a lack of discipline from his players, who he expected to hang on for a draw.

For a man who supported Liverpool as a boy, it was fairytale stuff. Only in the FA Cup...

Benitez already writing off title bid for 2008/09?

Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has played down his side's chances of winning the Premier League next season, describing the title as 'an option'.

The Reds finished fourth in the season just ended, 11 points behind champions Manchester United.

Their last league title came back in 1990 but Benitez did not sound overly confident of ending that depressing streak in 2008/2009.

'It is an option, for sure,' he told the club's website. 'We know our weaknesses and our strengths. We know where we need to improve, so we'll try to build a new team looking at these things.

'It's more difficult than in Spain because the top sides spend big, big money. We will try to do our best and the key for me is to not talk about the title.

'The key is to be near the top, to be contenders. If we stay close then I think we are capable of doing it.

'It's more difficult because after two years of Chelsea winning the league and spending big money, United needed to do the same.

'They started spending big money and Arsenal were also spending big money on young players. We are trying to do the same but because they (Man Utd, Chelsea and Arsenal) are continuing to spend big money, it makes it more difficult to catch up.

'You also see Aston Villa, Newcastle, West Ham and Everton spending money and having strong teams. It's not easy to be in the top four and be contenders but because we have a young squad we can try again.'
