Winners !

By Chris O'Brien - February 28 2006

Manchester United cruised to their first silverware in almost two years in exceptional style. A brace from Wayne Rooney and strikes from Louis Saha and Cristiano Ronaldo proved more than enough for the Red Devils as the club lifts only its second League Cup crown in the competition's history.

Sounds rather good, doesn't it? Sir Alex Ferguson's men cruised to a 4-0 victory over Wigan Athletic (http://www.sportnetwork.net/#) to secure the club's second League Cup triumph.
Plenty of beer, even more singing and another great day to support our wonderful football (http://www.sportnetwork.net/#) club.

Recent developments have seen it become one of the best grounds in Europe, and with all four stands going round all the corners the ground is completely enclosed making it look that little bit extra special.
Recent developments to Old Trafford saw three sides of the ground have an extra tier added. The North Stand is the most impressive, with it's huge three tiers. The Stretford End and Scoreboard End are now both two tiers, with the old Main Stand looking rather small in comparison with still just one tier of seats.
Away Fans:
For league fixtures, away supporters are allocated between the Main Stand (South) and Scoreboard End (East) of the ground. The standard allocation for league games is 3,500 although it is normally a little less for games with club rivals (City, Liverpool (http://www.sportnetwork.net/#), Leeds etc.) due to an extra couple of rows of stewards! For domestic Cup ties the allocation is 15%. The extra 6,000 fans are usually put in the top tier of the Scoreboard End.
Although I have only ever sat in the home section, I understand the view from the away areas of the ground is excellent.
Future Developments:
Plans to increase the capacity of over 75,000 are underway. Building will commence at the end of the current season and will be complete in time for the 2006/2007 term.<!-- StoryEnd -->

Ruud awakens for United

After weeks on the Manchester United sideline, Ruud Van Nistelrooy reclaimed his outright lead of the Premiership goalscorer league as his side beat West Ham 1-0 at Old Trafford. United move 5 points clear of Liverpool having played one less game while they sit 9 behind Chelsea, who have also played a game more.

Alex Ferguson

http://soccernet-att.espn.go.com/images/jb2/ferguson65.jpg

After spells as a player with Queen's Park, St Johnstone, Dunfermline, Glasgow Rangers, Falkirk and Ayr United, and as manager of East Stirlingshire, St Mirren and Aberdeen, Alex Ferguson succeeded Ron Atkinson as manager of Manchester United on 6 November 1986.

In the thirteen League matches up to Ferguson's arrival at Old Trafford, United had only won three and had lost six. They had also been knocked out of the Littlewoods Cup after suffering a 1-4 defeat at Southampton. Looking back it is easy to see why United's position was so dire: "Ferguson inherited a dispirited team of underachievers who had consistently, to their supporters' foaming discontent, failed to break Liverpool's domination. The team sheet drawn up by the new man for his first match says it all: Turner, Duxbury, Albiston, McGrath (Olsen), Moran, Hogg, Blackmore, Stapleton, Moses, Davenport, Barnes. The team lost 0-2 to Oxford United." (Jim White quoted in Total Sport, May 1997).

Stuck in the bottom four of the Division One table, Ferguson immediately set about attempting to stave off the very real threat of relegation. Without resorting to the transfer market, Ferguson guided United up the table to finish in eleventh place. By now it was apparent to Fergie that it was a major job to turn the club around. United were an entertaining side but one that seemed unable to cope with the more physical aspects of League football. Crucially for the future, there seemed to be few players coming through the youth system to challenge the established stars.

In his first full season, Ferguson guided United to a League runners-up position as new signings Viv Anderson, Steve Bruce and Brian McClair made their mark. This was followed by eleventh position in 1988/89 and, after a further threat of relegation, thirteenth position in 1989/90. The fans were not convinced by Alex Ferguson and on his third anniversary as manager of Manchester United a banner was unfurled in the scoreboard end saying: "Three years of excuses; Ta-ra Fergie". Ferguson remembers the period as 'Black December': "It was, without question, the lowest, most desperate point ever in all my years in management." (Alex Ferguson, Just Champion).

United's poor League form continued, but at least the fans were able to cheer a Cup run. On 17 May 1990, for the first time in five years, the fans tasted success when United won the FA Cup, defeating Crystal Palace 1-0 after a replay. United have since gone from strength to strength. In 1991 Ferguson's team were League Cup finalists, but went on to defeat Barcelona 2-1 in the European Cup-Winners' Cup Final.

However it was in the League that the Old Trafford faithful were demanding success. United again came close in 1991/92 when Leeds United pipped them to the title after United had looked the better team for most of the season. Some silverware did return to Old Trafford that season as Nottingham Forest were defeated 1-0 in the League Cup Final and Red Star Belgrade were defeated by the same scoreline in the European Super Cup Final.

Finally United's time had come, despite a strong challenge from Aston Villa, Ferguson's team became the inaugural Champions of the breakaway F.A. Premier League in 1992/93. The twenty-six year wait was over. "The Championship triumph, apart from ending 26 years of collective cursing and frustration, was unquestionably the breaching of a barrier that had defied so many talented people, world renowned players as well as Managers". (Alex Ferguson, Just Champion).

This Championship victory also won him the 'Manager of the Year' trophy, an award he won again the following year as United retained their hold on the Premier crown. His team went one better becoming only the sixth team to win the League and FA Cup Double. It was close to being an unprecedented treble but Ron Atkinson's Aston Villa side won a hard-fought League Cup Final 3-1.

His 1993 Premier League victory meant that Ferguson became the first manager to win League titles north and south of the border. He is also only the second manager, after Johan Cruyff, to win the European Cup-Winners' Cup with teams from different countries.

At the start of 1995 things were looking rosy for Ferguson. He'd just been awarded the C.B.E. in the New Year honours list, United had landed Andy Cole for £7m from Newcastle United and had just beaten their title rivals Blackburn Rovers 1-0 in a great battle at Old Trafford. A third Premier League title looked destined for the trophy room at Old Trafford. However on 25 January, United's season took a cruel twist when Eric Cantona attacked an abusive Crystal Palace fan after being sent off. Failure to win at West Ham on the last day of the season and losing to Everton in the FA Cup Final meant that the trophy cabinet at Old Trafford was empty for the first time in five years. Ferguson still muses that at least one trophy would have found it's way to Old Trafford had Cantona not been banned for nine months by the FA.

When the 1995/6 season began it did so minus Eric Cantona, Mark Hughes, Andrei Kanchelskis and Paul Ince, players who had played such an important part in United's success. By the end of the season, memories of 1995 had been washed away as United's 'kids', led by a rejuvenated Cantona, won an historic 'Double Double'. No less that five players were under the age of 21 and had graduated from United's youth system. A testimony to Alex Ferguson's managerial ability, which won him the Carling Premiership 'Manager of the Year' award yet again.

The following season expectations were high. Ferguson had made some shrewd buys during the summer including Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ronny Johnsen. In November 1996, the Boss completed ten years as manager of Manchester United, the longest serving coach since Sir Matt Busby and the second longest serving boss in the League behind Crewe's Dario Gradi.

The season ended with United picking up their fourth Premiership title and narrowly missing out on reaching the European Cup Final, losing the semi-final to the eventual winners Borussia Dortmund. Again Ferguson won the Carling Premiership 'Manager of the Year' award, confirming his place amongst the great Managers to have graced the British football scene.

That status was confirmed in the 1998/99 season, when United completed the unprecedented Treble – Premiership, FA Cup and European Cup. He followed Matt Busby to Buckingham Palace, and became the first working football manager to be knighted.

In the following season, 1999/2000, the pressure was really on for United to defend their three crowns. And although there was huge disappointment when they crashed out of the European Cup following a 3-2 defeat to Real Madrid, United again came up trumps on the domestic front as they stormed to their sixth Championship in eight years, finishing a massive 18 points ahead of second-placed Arsenal. Sir Alex also became the first United manager to lift the Inter-Continental Cup when the Reds defeated Palmeiras 1-0 (Keane scored) to become the first British winners of the competition.

The Boss made history again at the end of the 2000/01 season when he guided United to their third Championship in three consecutive seasons. The title race was virtually over in January, such was United's supremacy in the Premiership. Having led by 15 points just after the turn of the year, they never looked back and went on to finish 10 points ahead of nearest rivals Arsenal. However, Europe proved to be another big disappointment as United lost out at the quarter-final stage yet again, this time to Bayern Munich.

Although the end of season 2001/02 saw United finish trophyless for only the third time in 13 seasons, the club was boosted by the news that Sir Alex had decided to delay his retirement and stay on for a further three years. Another big plus was the form of striker Ruud Van Nistelrooy, who finished the campaign with 36 goals. Sir Alex had stuck by his initial decision to sign the big Dutchman, following his cruciate ligament injury a year earlier, and it certainly looked to be paying off.

Apart from their Worthington Cup final defeat to Liverpool, United were back to doing what they do best in 2002/03 - winning Championships; their eighth in eleven years to be precise. The triumph, which Sir Alex described as the 'best title win yet,' came at the end of an incredible run-in. Arsenal had been clear favourites but they were overhauled in spectacular fashion as United won nine of their last ten games, the pick of which was their 6-2 victory at Newcastle. Meanwhile, in the Champions League, United's epic quarter-final clash with Real Madrid will forever be remembered by the Old Trafford faithful, even though the Reds were eliminated from the competition by Ronaldo's superb hat-trick.

Did You Know?

Sir Alex Ferguson was voted the 'Best Coach' in Europe at the 1999 UEFA Football Gala.

Sir Alex is a keen musician, and is learning to play the piano in his spare time.

As a boy he would climb over walls to watch his beloved Glasgow Rangers, for whom he would later play.

He shares his birthday, on New Year's Eve, with former club captain Steve Bruce.

He owns several racehorses, and regularly watches them in action.

Keane's United testimonial confirmed for May 9

Manchester United will play Celtic in Roy Keane's testimonial at Old Trafford on Tuesday, May 9.

A widely-anticipated announcement has now confirmed Keane's decision to take up the offer of a testimonial match, which formed part of the deal which saw him leave United in November.

Although notoriously critical of testimonial games, Keane is expected to donate most of the proceeds to charity and has already declared his intention to release 1,000 free tickets to local Manchester schools and United supporters' clubs.

Although there is no indication which team Keane will play for, it would be no surprise if he donned the famous United shirt for one final time, even for only part of the game.

'I am grateful to Manchester United for awarding me a testimonial game and to Celtic for agreeing to participate in it,' said Keane.

'I look forward to returning to express my appreciation to the fans for the support that they had given me over the last 12 years.'

Sir Alex Ferguson added: 'This is something that we wanted to do this season as Roy started the season with us.

'The supporters want to recognise the unbelievable contribution and success he had with Manchester United.

'He was a fantastic player and captain for me and I hope he gets the proper send-off he truly deserves.

'It will be fantastic night for everyone.'

Keane left Manchester late last year after winning seven Premiership titles and four FA Cups in 480 appearances for United.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell added: 'Celtic FC is delighted to play in Roy Keane's testimonial match at Old Trafford.

'Roy was a magnificent servant to Manchester United for 12 years and I am sure he will forever be regarded as one of their greatest ever players. Clearly we are delighted to now have Roy here at Celtic.

'I am sure the atmosphere will be electric on the evening and it will be a fantastic occasion for fans of both teams, paying tribute to one of the greatest ever players to play the game.'

Keane's departure from Old Trafford stunned the football world.

After winning seven Premiership titles and four FA Cups - famously missing out on the 1999 Champions League Final due to suspension - during a 480-game career with the Red Devils, many expected Keane to be offered a coaching role by Ferguson when the current season came to an end.

Instead, his time at United came to an end in a blaze of publicity following an attack on his team-mates during an MUTV interview which was deemed too damaging to broadcast.

Keane has since played down the role of the interview in hastening his departure, insisting his relationship with Ferguson had just reached 'the end of the line'.

However, the 34-year-old's departure has clearly not lessened Ferguson's opinion of him as a player.

'This is something we wanted to do this season because Roy started the season with us,' said Ferguson.

'The supporters want to recognise the unbelievable contribution and success he had with Manchester United.

'He was a fantastic player and captain for me and I hope he gets the proper send off he truly deserves.

'It will be a fantastic night for everyone.'

Although there was wild speculation over where the Irishman may end up when he left United, he eventually opted to move into the Scottish Premier League with his beloved Celtic, lifting his first trophy with the Hoops following their recent CIS Insurance Cup Final win over Dunfermline.

Currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, Keane still needs to play another four games for the Hoops to qualify for a title medal but he is expected to be fit to face United in what is sure to be a sell-out crowd and, given his long-standing hip problem, could yet be his final game as a professional.

hard to say cos Chelsea should have no problem grabing the 3 full points from West Ham (Chelsea playing at home). But MU will have hard time to grab 3 points from Arsenal :(

We can have some indication of the standing by this weekend if MU or Chelsea prevails. ;)

Manchester United striker Louis Saha is convinced Sir Alex Ferguson's in-form side can overhaul stuttering Chelsea at the top of the Premiership table.

The Red Devils are now just seven points adrift of Jose Mourinho's men following their 2-1 win at Bolton and Chelsea's 0-0 draw with Birmingham.

And with the two sides still having to face each other at Stamford Bridge next month, Saha believes the title race is firmly back on.

'This is a massive win for us and now we have to keep putting the pressure on. We definitely believe it is on,' he said.

'We believe we can do it. Chelsea have got to make mistakes, we know that. We have to keep playing the way that we are. We know that we can not make mistakes.

'But I am in the best form of my life and was really happy to get another goal, and the way we are playing up front - with Ruud as well - is all working well.

'We are in great form and have to keep it going.'

Ferguson is also beginning to feel that Chelsea could be caught, with the Blues having also lost away to Fulham recently.

'I think it is asking Chelsea a question,' said Ferguson. 'Everyone expected them to beat Birmingham, but they didn't.

'And they have got to play Bolton in a couple of weeks when the pitch will be worse than against us, and they have to go to Blackburn.

'If your form is good in April then you have a good chance - I've said that for years. If your form is stuttering then you can throw things away.

'We're catching Chelsea but we just hope the winning line doesn't come too quickly.'

I don't think Arsenal will want to take revenge to stop Manchester United, but allowing Manchester United to beat them. That applies to Tottenham Hotspur and Charlton. Why? Three clubs are all London clubs and instead of letting Chelsea to wrap title, i think they will want to push Manchester United to the top and challenge Chelsea all the way rather than letting their london rival to retain the Premiership title. :D

Man United unveil AIG as new sponsors

Manchester United have agreed a British record £56.5million shirt sponsorship deal with US finance giant American International Group (AIG).

United chief executive David Gill confirmed the four-year deal, which dwarfs the £10million-a-season contract Premiership champions Chelsea have with Samsung, at Old Trafford this lunchtime.

Although the figure is less than Gibraltar-based gaming company Mansion were prepared to pay, there were widespread concerns within club circles about being linked so heavily with a gambling organisation.

It means AIG will be only the third company to have their name on the famous red shirt, following on from Sharp and Vodafone.

While sum is slightly less than the world record £15million-a-year Juventus receive from Libyan oil company Tamoil, it still represents a major coup for Gill and his negotiation team, who have confounded the predictions of many pundits who felt they would struggle to match the £9million-a-year deal Vodafone decided to terminate two years early.

'Let's be clear,' said Gill.

'We passed up the opportunity to do the world's biggest shirt deal to do the right shirt deal, one that is right for Manchester United and one that underlines our position as the world's leading club.

'AIG's global operations complement our great fanbase and we are excited about the global prospects this relationship brings.

'This is a blue chip deal for a blue chip club.'

Today's announcement had been widely anticipated following Mansion's public accusations of 'double-dealing' on Monday when they confirmed United's commercial director Andy Anson had terminated discussions with the company on Sunday evening.

Anson has been widely criticised by some vocal sections of the United support for his failure to secure a replacement more swiftly but he was extensively involved in talks over a new deal, along with Gill and Bryan Glazer.

Red Devils officials have been angered at frequent suggestions that the much-cherished 'United' brand had been badly tarnished by the Malcolm Glazer takeover and the figures involved in the AIG deal provide proof the American's controversial £790million buy-out has had no impact on the club's standing in the commercial world.

Neither, it appears, has the recent relative lack of success affected the club's popularity and the club are likely to set a new ground attendance record for a league game at Old Trafford this Sunday when Champions League semi-finalists Arsenal visit.

Gill added: 'On and off the pitch, Manchester United always seeks to be both the first and the best.

'We do things differently to others. Whether it's our faith in our Academy over the years, or our approach to sponsors - we are unique.

'The Manchester United shirt is the most iconic image in world sport and the chance for companies to appear on it is very rare.

'This deal re-establishes the club firmly among the most valuable names in world sport.'

Rooney inspires United

Wayne Rooney inspired Manchester United to an impressive 2-0 victory over Arsenal on Sunday to keep up the pressure on Premier League leaders Chelsea. However, the Blues' comfortable 4-1 win over West Ham ensured the reigning champions still have a seven-point lead over United. Defeat at Old Trafford dealt a blow to Arsenal's hopes of securing fourth-place in the league.

"Liverpool simply got no chance to claim 2nd spot liao!" Are you a liverpool fan, sounds like it ! forgive me no offence. Dun believe the gunners give Man U any chance of Denial for Liverpool to not catch up ! is a race for the 2nd, 3rd places or may be 1st. Just a few games left dun believe chelsea will be that bad to lose all their balance games.

Conclusion:
It was a great game last night, Man U did a good job to explore the loop holes of Arsenal's two left and right backs in the 2nd half. BOth goals were classic finish ! Not forgetting it could have been 3 - 0, best of all it took an Asian to seal the gunners fate... well done Pak ! I feel that the guneers did not have fire power at the front to gun down Man U. Man U did their best and took every chance they have to put the goals behind the German No1. If England would meet Germany in the world cup finals...hope england would display another possible history in the old english finishing !

It will be like this if Chelsea draw Bolton, Blackburn, Newcastle and or lose to Man Utd (providing Man Utd wins all remaining matches)

I believe a lot of clubs doesn't want Chelsea to retain the title. Like Bolton and Blackburn all chasing for UEFA cup places and against Newcastle will mark the Alan Shearer's last game. So with all the possiblities, there are reasons to say that Chelsea might lose their grip on the title. I reckon Man Utd to win all remaining matches based on the form they had now, it's hard to believe that they will lose any remaining matches.

I was sad to see that West Ham doesn't know how to take the advantage that they are playing with 10 men and i was surprised Anton Ferdinand wasn't playing.

My thoughts are only on Chelsea vs Man Utd. This a hard one for Man Utd to complete a double against Chelsea. Concerns over Spurs is nothing. Did you still remember Spurs delibrately losing to Man Utd a few seasons ago, just to make Man U earned 3 points against Arsenal. Did you still remember Spurs delibrately losing to Man Utd a few seasons ago, just to make Man U earned 3 points against Arsenal. Do you think they will react differently this time and plus the fact that Man Utd is playing well now. It's hard to see Man Utd not to win this one. :D

Well is possible no right or wrong at this point is good analysis, i see this is a great topic right now to debate abt before the session ends. Aspecially the title chase can be either ManU or Chelsea.

Is just how many mistakes each team makes from now till the end. And the results will show every decision and mistake consume by them taken into account ! Is situations like these causes a team to lose...they should work together with the manager to win the title. Worst may be not the teams but the 3 black man in the fields that makes mistakes ? :D

His old skool ways of training, using terror tactics and demoralzing players by benching them will make them work harder to fight for 1st 11. Is the new generation of players ... dun think it works for the next season them.

Good to see that Ferigie is hopeful, unfortunately his player does not think so, got this from MU site

Rio Ferdinand dismissed all talk of Manchester United stealing the Premiership title from Chelsea as ‘silly.’ The England defender said: “In my mind, and in a lot of the lads’ minds, we are still concentrating all our efforts on finishing second. If anything happens above and beyond that, it would be fantastic. But to think about anything other than that at the moment would be silly." Vic Holly, The Sun

Mathematically the numbers may shows Man U to be at second, reading from Rio's optimistic review a second spot is very much secured unless the boys in blue decides to give it away to the reds.... realistically it wont happen like a fairy tale..." we live happily ever after ". 1st spot will be a bounce.

Title race not over yet if Chelsea cannot win any of the remaining 5 matches. The way Manchester United played against Sunderland was splendid. The only problem with them, is that they did not score a single goal. Just take a look at the chances they have created....very scary....keeps on attacking the sunderland...Ronaldo wasted a lot of chances, taking chances as experiment.

Chelsea is leading by 9 points and with 4 games remaining, how to catch up??? In football it is the goals that count I am afraid, no doubt they have many chances of scoring but in the end the gk raised to the occasion.

Sunderland nearly scored one too, just imagine if they did, the situation would have been worst

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has spoken of his desire to become a coach at Old Trafford after he hangs up his boots.

The Norwegian striker, who recently signed a new two-year deal with the Reds, has already begun enhancing his credentials by tutoring some of the club's blossoming youngsters.

"Coaching is part of the new contract I've just signed and I've recently been training the youth team and occasionally the Reserves," he told ManUtd.com.

Solskjaer is still very much part of United's playing squad, but the club are also making use of his experience whilst also providing the 33-year-old with the chance to develop his coaching skills.

Ole has been studying to gain his UEFA coaching badges in recent years, and he also has experience working with young players in his homeland.

"I started coaching at the football academies back home in Norway about three-and-a-half years ago during the summer break," Ole explained.

"Giving something back to the kids was something I wanted to do and the more coaching I've done, the more I've enjoyed it."

United have confirmed that David Bellion will complete a permanent summer move to Nice.

The 23-year-old striker has been on loan at the French club since the beginning of January and will join them on a permanent basis from 1 July.

In a club statement, United said: "We have agreed for the permanent transfer of David Bellion's registration to Nice on the opening day of the French transfer window on 1 July for an undisclosed fee.

"Everyone at the club wishes David all the best in his future career."

Bellion joined United from Sunderland in July 2003. He made 22 appearances in his first season, scoring three goals.

Last season saw him feature 18 times (10 as a substitute), bagging 5 goals.

He spent the first half of the current campaign on loan at West Ham, before moving to his native France in January. He will leave Old Trafford with a total of 40 appearances and 8 goals to his name.

Ruud van Nistelrooy is backing Wayne Rooney to scoop the PFA Player of the Year award.

The 20-year-old striker, who has also been nominated for the Young Player's accolade, faces stiff competition from Chelsea trio John Terry, Frank Lampard and Joe Cole, and Thierry Henry and Steven Gerrard.

Nevertheless, van Nistelrooy believes his strike partner has a great chance of winning the prize and says it would be richly deserved.

"Wayne thoroughly deserves to be in contention for this award and I'm really pleased he's been nominated," said van Nistelrooy who won it in 2002.

"His form this season has been excellent and it has definitely been good enough to win the trophy. I certainly hope he does win it.

"It's a great honour to be recognised by fellow players and although it's a strong field, Wayne has a great chance."

If Rooney were to win both categories he would be the first since Andy Gray in 1977.

A number of Reds have been honoured by their fellow professionals in the past. Van Nistelrooy's award four years ago completed a hat-trick of wins for United following the prizes for Roy Keane (2001) and Teddy Sheringham (2000).

Eric Cantona won it in 1994, two years after Gary Pallister's success, while Mark Hughes is one of only three players - Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry being the others - to have won it twice, in 1989 and 1991.

MANCHESTER, England : England's 1966 World Cup star Bobby Charlton believes striker Wayne Rooney can have the same shattering impact on this summer's finals as Pele had for Brazil in 1958.

Pele went to the finals in Sweden as an unknown teenager but inspired Brazil to the first of their five World Cup triumphs.

"I'm looking forward to the World Cup because I believe Wayne Rooney could be one of the major finds in world football," said Charlton.

"When Pele burst onto the scene in 1958 he surprised everyone because his type of skill and talent had just not been seen before. Wayne is that type of player too."

Meanwhile, Charlton added it would be "the biggest surprise of his life" if United won the Premiership title this season.

With Chelsea needing only a point to claim the Premiership crown, their second in two years under Jose Mourinho, United look to have gone three seasons without winning the title.

Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson said that there "isnt a supporter in the world that would expect me to say, there you go Chelsea, its your title", and vowed to continue until the title becomes mathematically impossible.

Charlton told www.mutv.com that the manager's comments are an insight into the attitude demanded at the club.

"The number of times we have scored goals near the end of games - thats pure Manchester United," said Charlton.

"It always seems to be the way with this club. But if we won the title it would be the biggest surprise of my whole life. I really dont think it is possible.

"However, I know what Alex means. He knows that the team will give its best until we know for certain that we are not champions." - AFP /dt

The rumours surrounding Ruud van Nistelrooy's future at United have seen him linked with a move to Tottenham, with Spurs midfielder Michael Carrick and £10 million moving the opposite way.

Quinton Fortune's imminent summer departure has apparently alerted Bolton, while Tim Howard has emerged as a potential target for Wigan.

Rooney Collects PFA Young Player Trophy

http://www.manutd.com/pix/1.gifWayne Rooney has been named the Professional Footballers' Association Young Player of the Year for the second year in a row.

Rooney collected the award, voted for by fellow professionals, at a gala ceremony in London's Grosvenor House Hotel on Sunday night.

"To win it twice on the run is a great honour and I am delighted with the award," said Wayne

Rooney has scored 19 goals this season, but it also his overall contribution to United's play that earned him the accolade.

He beat Reds team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas, Tottenham's Aaron Lennon, Charlton's Darren Bent and West Ham's Anton Ferdinand to the honour.

PFA chief Gordon Taylor said: "Wayne Rooney's development under Sir Alex Ferguson has been great to see.

"He has been such a key part of a United side that has won the Carling Cup and, of late, has mounted a belated challenge to Chelsea in the title race.

"For a young man he has got such strength and it is all allied to great skill and perception.

"He is also starting to show a lot more maturity too, which is pleasing to see and bodes well for Manchester United and England."

extract from Soccernet:

With goal difference heavily in their favour, Manchester United need just three points from their final three fixtures over the next week to stave off the threat of Liverpool for the runners-up berth.

So, by becoming the first team to beat Chelsea on their own patch in the Premiership since Jose Mourinho took charge of the Blues two summers ago, United would not only put the Londoners' championship celebrations on hold but book their place in the group stages of Europe's major competition.

Sir Alex Ferguson says Ruud van Nistelrooy was left out of the team because of a "number issues" during the week leading up to the Charlton game.

Van Nistelrooy left the ground before the game, but without elaborating on the specifics, Sir Alex said he will be discussing the situation with the club's directors.

"There have been a couple of issues during the week that concerned me in terms of the spirit at the club. On such an important day, I just felt that Ruud should be left out.

"It's straightforward," he added. "We'll be discussing it with the club's directors tomorrow and Tuesday and that's it."

The club had confirmed in a statement before the game: "Ruud van Nistelrooy has gone home and will not play against Charlton."

The Dutchman had been at the ground for the match, but later left the stadium. The club added: "We are not prepared to say anything further as we are concentrating on the game against Charlton."

Louis Saha and 19-year-old striker Giuseppe Rossi start the match up front for the Reds, which United won 4-0.

The tabloids are predicting all-change at United as the transfer window edges nearer.

Ruud van Nistelrooy continues to be linked with a move away from Old Trafford, with former club PSV Eindhoven the latest side to be credited with an interest.

Feeding off their own rumours, the tabloids have set about casting their eye over potential replacements for the Dutch goalscorer - with Chelsea's Eidur Gudjohnsen strongly linked.

Then there's the old central midfield debate. Michael Carrick's name crops up for the second month in a row, while usual suspects Rino Gattuso and Mahamadou Diarra are still there or thereabouts...

Ruud van Nistelrooy's row with Sir Alex Ferguson has cost him an appearance in his old mate Roy Keane's testimonial at Old Trafford tomorrow.

As one of the few United first-team stars to speak up for Keane following the Irishman's well-publicised, but never publicly heard, MUTV lambasting of the Red Devils lamentable performance in their 4-1 defeat at Middlesbrough in October, Van Nistelrooy was looking forward to the chance of meeting up with his old captain again.

Instead, the Dutchman will join him only in his exile from Old Trafford.

Although there has been no official confirmation from any party over Van Nistelrooy's availability to face Celtic, it is understood the 29-year-old has already returned to the Netherlands to begin preparations for this summer's World Cup.

Sir Alex Ferguson is due to speak with United chief executive David Gill in the next 24 hours to determine Van Nistelrooy's future. However, it seems the player's fate has already been sealed and once the World Cup is done, he will begin looking in earnest for a new club.

In truth, the process began some time ago, with Van Nistelrooy having at least one conversation with fellow countryman Clarence Seedorf about the possibility of him linking up with him at AC Milan, a club who are believed to be interested in acquiring the former PSV Eindhoven's services.

Van Nistelrooy has so far opted not to speak out about the accusation from Ferguson that his attitude in training last week was undermining team morale to such an extent that he opted to select 19-year-old Giuseppe Rossi above him for yesterday's win over Charlton.

There is a counter-claim to the perceived theory that Van Nistelrooy walked out of United's team hotel yesterday lunchtime though, with suggestions being raised that the Dutchman - who only last month became one of only eight Manchester United players to score 150 goals for the club - was ordered out by Ferguson.

That presumably came following Van Nistelrooy's negative reaction to learning Rossi had been given a starting spot against Charlton.

It has not gone unnoticed by the striker that Ferguson, having effectively decided Keane's position at United was untenable following his MUTV tirade, has now launched such a public broadside himself.

Whether Van Nistelrooy will opt to break his own silence before Holland face Cameroon in the first of their pre-World Cup friendlies on May 27 remains to be seen but clearly his relationship with Ferguson has deteriorated markedly from the night he stood in the bowels of the Stade de France in November and reflected on an unexpected defeat to Lille just four days after the Middlesbrough debacle.

At the time, with Keane and Gary Neville missing, Van Nistelrooy was United captain. And, though disappointed at the Red Devils downturn in fortunes was apparently determined to pull them through the bad times.

'When I came four and a half years ago, United were unbeatable,' he reflected on that dark Paris night.

'Now, in bad times I just want to give it my all to get United back to where everyone wants to see them.

'I am going nowhere. Over the coming years, it is personal to me to take the club back to where I want to see it.'

At the time, the captain's armband seemed to bring an extra 20% to Van Nistelrooy's game. Ferguson's totally logical decision to hand Neville the honour of permanently replacing Keane as skipper seemed to have the opposite effect.

Ferguson is said to have been intensely unhappy with Van Nistelrooy's performance in the FA Cup defeat to Liverpool on February 21. A week later, he sensationally dropped the striker for the Carling Cup Final win over Wigan.

Louis Saha totally justified his inclusion at the Millennium Stadium and nothing that has happened since would lead any neutral observer to believe United are not a better side with the Frenchman in it.

And, as he reflects on his next career move, that is the bitter truth which will hurt Van Nistelrooy most of all.

Because, towards end of the season, he hardly play. SAF felt that he is a lazy fella (indeed, he hardly chase for ball, but always have the killing finishing).

Now, if selling RVN, then SAF have very big decision - to get in 1st world (I believe this is the most "in" word to use after the election) Striker or 1st world Midfielder. MU can't afford both in view it's financial debt incurred (Financing Gazaar to bought over MU)

MANCHESTER, England, May 9 (Reuters) - Almost 70,000 fans filled Old Trafford on Tuesday to honour former captain Roy Keane's contribution to Manchester United.

Ireland midfielder Keane, 34, who joined Celtic in January after more than 12 1/2 years and close to 500 games for United, was given a fitting send off by the Manchester fans in a testimonial match won 1-0 by the home team.

Portuguese winger Cristiano Ronaldo scored the only goal in the second half.

Keane, who won seven league titles and four FA Cups with United, swapped the green and white hoops of Celtic for the red of the Manchester club at halftime.

Playing one final time for United manager Alex Ferguson, who hailed Keane as one of the club's finest players of all time, the Irishman set up the winning goal for Ronaldo.

'You get clubs who are happy to come second or third. Not United,' Keane said in the match programme.

'The fans don't deserve anything less than winning and that's what the manager and the club are about.'

Keane also spoke briefly on the pitch at the end of the game, saying: 'This is something I will remember for the rest of my life'.
