Just sharing something i learnt about the dry trickle system,

Currently, I am using 4 feet overhead dry trickle system- 3 tier height and 3 rows.

With Mr Aqua bio rings (suppose to be good n pricy) bio balls and top layer with wool filter.

First myth is that It has to be washed for both bio rings n balls. May b 6mths time frame is a good gauge. Cos i heard alot of people saying there's no need to wash just leave it n the bacteria will increase.

Second to increase bacteria you need to add in manually mayb 10000 bacteria brand from qianhu to cultivate more bacteria.

The water will turn cloudy though the fishes may still seems healthy. This is because the bacteria count is low and is unable to cope with the waste esp carnivorous meat eating fishes.

After rinsing the bio rings n balls (dont wash all of them at the same time- you will wash most the bacteria away). And pls add the bacteria, within 2 days you should get back the crystal clear water.

Also make sure that the power head suction is also clean and not choked with slime etc esp on the inside where the magnetic head spins.

Because stacking the medias is also very critical to the setup. Perhaps you want to show some pic here in order to get more advise?

Bros,

jus to share. I encountered same problem previously.

First one day water suddenly gets cloudy.

Water changes n adding bacteria doesnt help.

Fins of fish (my 2 ST and distichodus sexfasciatus) turns blur and have threads.

Immediately next day the DS died. ST are tougher, but one start to develop infection in the mouth.

LFS said it is likely due to our water supply as it is now added with chloramine instead of chlorine. A lot of their aros died upon changes water w/o adding antichloramine.

So suggested to use SERA antichloramine n metal. Also to add big bag of coral chips (cos my is 4x2x2feet tank)

Within the next day, water becomes crystal clear. By the next week, ST fin and infection in mouth cleared.

Now i only change max 25% water weekly n add antichlormine solution.

I dont know wat fish u keeping. But the LFS explain that giant fishes need coral chips to boost up PH else problem comes.

Hope this helps.
