Dear ST bros,

Need your advice and i dont know what's the problem:

I have 2 ST that has the following symptoms:
1. One has a skin tear at outside the mouth area and one fin with certain parts that has turned white
2. The other has red infections in the mouth even on the "tonsils"-the white thing that hang on the roof of its mouth

Have tried the following:
1. Furan 7 - doesnt seemed to work in this case
2. Partial water changed 25% 3 days interval - no use also and added SERA anti chlorine
3. increased bacterial powder
4. put in 12 pieces of big dried leaves for a week n have since taken it out

The thing is that they are eating well except for all these funny symptom. Of course, the one with the mouth infection has slight problem putting the feeder goldfish in its mouth.

I dont know whats wrong n what to do next. But i do suspect something is wrong with the water.

I went to a LFS, the owner told me not to do anything at this moment (mayb she dont know what to do)

She told me not to put intoo much bacteria as the "extra ones" will die n cause water to turn bad and affect quality of the water. Is it true, i thought the more the merrier..

She says to add water stabiliser salt which is different from the mineral rock salt.

Currently, am using a overhead dry trickle system with 3 rows and 3 tiers. top row is sponge, second row bio balls, bottom row 2 boxes are bio ring and one box bio ball. Am thinking of adding 2 packet of coral chips those in nets directly into the tank.

Bros, pls advise me what are those things that shd be out and to add into the tank or system. I think there are too much thing or "tonic" added into the system now. Help!

Dear david lee,

Noted your concern. Meanwhile lets get to the root of the fish prob before we go on to your filteration system. The suggession on fish medication for your consideration :

- sick fishes are advisable to remove from the community tank and place into a hospital tank. Supply lots of air bubble w/ sponge and low rate of water flow. This is because sick fishes means they are sick and we would'nt expect them to be swimming in a high flow rate and medicating them. From your description, I think you are applying medication and letting the medication running into your filteration system. I have personal experience that those low grade ceramic rings affect the effectiveness of medication. Hence, if u take the fishes out and place into a seperate hospital/spare tank, you will realise they heal much better neutral conditions,

- from the sickness you descripe, and after you have done so much adding this and that. Just do a water change of 30% and allow them to rest for at least 24hrs to allow the fishes to rest and get back to neutral and rid off any medication. This is to prepare your fish for another type of medication.

- I suggest you try out Befuran, which works like antibiotic to treat these general sickness from your fishes. Make sure u use the correct dossage according to medication instructions.

- Do not do anything and leave it for 3 days with moderate temp heater.

- Do not add any other substances.

- Monitor the fish and repeat procedures if necessary.

Let us know the outcome them we monitor from here. Hope your fishes recover well .:geeked:

Some pointers,

- should your medication run into your filteration system, it kills off all the bb, unless some powerful high technology filter media claims to be very effective and will not affect the medication. Such filter media I come across are usually made in germany such as sera, eheim. But I always apply common sense rule and medicate the fishes without running medication into the filter medias.

- some filteration medias are of low grade(which you buy without knowing)which might affect and make medication worst, eg, some LFS sells "so called" glass fiber ceramic rings, which after 1 yr I realised they lose effectiveness and tends to make my water condition probelmatic,

- when fish r sick, increasing bb is not the concept of curing the fish general sickness, when the fish is sick, practically would mean the resistance against the decease could not substain. hence, the fish needs medication,

Correct me if anything I mention is wrong, we all share and learn from experiences.:geeked:

Tks brothers for your advise n concern,

Both tigers are now fine. I checked with a LFS and they say simply add coral chips.

Probably the PH is low.

Now everythings fine.

In fact the water is now so crystal clear and the fishes have again increased in size to about 13 inch plus.

They are so beautiful.

Bros, any lobang where to get distichodus sexfasciatus, must be approx 5 inches. such a waste my previous one about 1feet die cos of the water.

Pls take note dont do too much water change at one go. The water now contains chloramine n is stronger than chlorine. Use anti metal, chlorine and chloramine when doing water change.
