Hi to all!!

Just to add into this forum, I like to write about the things you must have in keeping discus.

1) Big net with very fine holes to catch discus
2) pH measuring kit (whether electronic or chemical)
3) 150W to 200W good brand heater like Rena or Tetra type

Medicine to have :

1) good anti-chloramine chemical like aqua-safe
2) Acriflavine medicine (the chinese yellow solution for cuts) . Alternatively you can buy the Sera Mycopur or the Ocean Free General Aid
3) Methylene Blue
4) Anti-internal medicine like Huey Hung Mq4 and Mq5
5) Good amount of Rock Salt.

First time i hear about this. Its like saying that the parasite are immune to salt?

Lets try an experiment, imagine if you add salt a little at a time over say a month every day to your discus tank. Would your discus become a marine fish?

Based on my limited knowledge, this is something related to Osmosis. Osmosis refers to transfer of solvent; transfer of solute is called dialysis. In either case the direction of transfer is from the area of higher concentration of the material transferred to the area of lower concentration.

Let see below explaination. IMHO, Parasits have smaller membrans compare to fishes, as such, parasits have lower resistance level compare to fishes.

If blood cells (or other cells) are placed in contact with an isotonic solution, they will neither shrink nor swell. If the solution is hypertonic, the cells will lose water and shrink (plasmolyze). If the solution is hypotonic (or if pure solvent is used) the cells will swell; the osmotic pressure that is developed may even be great enough to rupture the cell membrane. Saltwater from the ocean is hypertonic to the cells of the human body; the drinking of ocean water dehydrates body tissues instead of quenching thirst.

http://education.yahoo.com/reference/encyclopedia/entry/osmosis

Some more reading about osmosis : http://www.tvdsb.on.ca/westmin/science/sbi3a1/Cells/Osmosis.htm
http://arbl.cvmbs.colostate.edu/hbooks/cmb/cells/pmemb/osmosis.html

May be prolong "living" in hypertonic conditions (salty water) will make the cell persistance to the osmosis. In another word, fresh water parasits could stay alive bit longer in salty water. This idea come from the successfull experiment in converting some marine fish to fresh water fish, such as Converted Ray.

However, I don't think there would be Converted parasits due to the difference size of the cells. Fish have bigger cell membran compare to parasits. So, I would say parasits those prolong exposure in salty water could stay alive longer than those normal parasits in Hypertonic condition (salty water)

My only concern is, the quantity of salt added in the tank. If the tank water is Hypertonic (salty enough), then parasits should not have any chance to stay alive in the first place. The cell in the parasits body would shrink and make it die. But, if the salt quantity added is not enough to become Hypertonic, then it would like "training ground" for the parasits. The scenario is like human "drinking alcohol". Frequent drinker have higher tolerance to the alcohol effect compare to those rarely drink.

I might be wrong.
