Louis Saha and Mikael Silvestre are the latest Reds to be told they are playing in the World Cup this summer after both were named in France's 23-man squad for the tournament in Germany.

Ji-sung Park is also heading for the finals after being called up to the South Korean World Cup squad as manager Dick Advocaat named his 23-man squad.

Park is one of three English-based players along with Tottenham full-back Lee Young-pyo and Wolves striker Seol Ki-hyeon.

Argentina coach Jose Pekerman confirmed that Gabriel Heinze will definitely be in his squad. Heinze hasn't played for United's first team since September when he damaged knee ligaments in the Champions League draw with Villarreal.

He returned for the reserves in April, but a knock in training meant he missed the remaining matches of the season.

Holland coach Marco van Basten will take United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar and Reds striker Ruud van Nistelrooy with him to the finals.

Meanwhile, Tim Howard is one of three goalkeepers in Bruce Arena's USA squad. However, fellow countryman Jonathan Spector, who spent last season on loan with Charlton, misses out after suffering a dislocated shoulder.

Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) and Nemanja Vidic (Serbia & Montenegro) are certainties to be included in the squads for their respective nations.

World Cup 2006
International (Team Players)
Argentina (Gabriel Heinze)
England (Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Gary Neville)
France (Mikael Silvestre, Louis Saha)
Holland (Edwin van der Sar, Ruud van Nistelrooy)
Portugal Pending (Cristiano Ronaldo)
Serbia & Montenegro Pending (Nemanja Vidic)
South Korea (Ji-sung Park)
USA (Tim Howard)

Roy Keane says the future of the club is in "safe hands" and the former skipper is backing the Reds to bounce back after going three seasons without the title.

The 34-year-old midfielder was speaking after his testimonial match at Old Trafford which United won 1-0 against Keane's current club Celtic.

Keane says he expects to see a couple of new arrivals at Old Trafford during the summer and is predicting great things from United's promising young stars in the future.

"It's going to be tough but hopefully United will bounce back next season," declared Keane. "I'm sure they'll be one or two players leaving but I also expect there to be one or two ones coming in.

"The club have got some good young players coming through - I watched the Reserves win the league and the Treble last week - and they've got some excellent youth players as well.

"I'm sure Manchester United is in very, very safe hands," he added.

Reflecting on his shock exit from United last November, Keane insists he has no regrets over the way things ended.

"It was all very amicable," he recalled. "The manager and I shook hands and both agreed it was the right thing to do and it was, there's no doubt in my mind about that.

"I've met up with the manager on a couple of occasions since then and it's been fine. I'm a grown man, I accepted it and moved on.

"My heart will always be with United but things happen and you have to get on with your life."

Over 69,000 United and Celtic fans packed themselves inside Old Trafford to say their final farewells to Keane who played a half for each side.

"I'm grateful to both clubs, the players and of course the supporters," he said afterwards. "It actually surprised me how much I enjoyed it!

"Coming back finished things off very nicely and it was a great occasion."

Alex Ferguson used to be a God in all our eyes. Now I'm no longer sure that is the case.

Since delivering his first trophy to the Old Trafford faithful sixteen years ago, Ferguson's tireless work rate and motivational skills, brought a series of trophies to the cabinet at headquarters. We've lapped it up, sung his name at will and praised him beyond belief. I wonder did a point come where Fergie believed he alone was responsible for the re-birth of Manchester United?

The latest scandal (and that is what it is) involving Ruud Van Nistelrooy is another chink in the armour of Ferguson. Whatever the reasons, Ferguson wants him out and is now looking for black marks against Ruud to leak to the media. My own hunch is that after the Glazers added the cost of Van der Saar, Evra & Vidic to their massive ?540M debt, Fergie has been told he has to sell before he can buy. I think he's looked at whom he can offload for the most cash and Ruud is the victim. A Keane replacement is a must for long-term success and for us to catch Chelsea, but at what cost is this seemingly non-existent person going to arrive?

We've seen it before time & again. When a player out-lives his usefulness or blots his copybook he's shown the door. Ince signed his own death warrant by trying to pick the team V Ipswich in March 1995. Hughes was allowed join Chelsea after Ferguson landed Cole while Kanchelskis' murky financial dealings saw him off-loaded to Goodison. Stam wrote a book which Ferguson didn't like so popped his clogs off to Lazio and Beckham found himself frozen out so that Ole Solskjaer could be converted into a winger. As for Roy Keane? Well you don't get shown the exit door in more dramatic fashion than our midfield warrior was. Now the Sun & Star are tripping over themselves with puns like 'Van drives off' as they delight in trying to break the exclusive on Ruud leaving.

Some of the exits above I would agree with (It was the right time for Hughes to leave even though it broke my heart and allowing Ince to go was definitely the correct decision) but others leave a lot to be desired. We had no obvious replacements for Stam or Beckham and paid the price. We lost six of our first fifteen premiership games in the 2001-2002 season after Stam departed and for all his wing wizardry and ball skills, Christiano Ronaldo lacks two things Beckham had in abundance [WINDOWS-1252?]? The ability to put the ball on the head or foot of any player from any part of the field and a work rate that protected any full back he played in front of. At 21 Ronaldo has a great future ahead of him. As Beckham turned 21 he was helping United to our second double.

Red Issue described Ferguson's tactics in trying to offload Ruud as 'dabbling in the black arts'. For too long now we've seen Fergie doing this sort of stuff while ignoring the pleas of players like Keane to halt the decline in standards. Contrast this effort to sell Ruud with Wenger's sale of Vieira last summer. Wenger's only comment was that he felt it was good business to obtain ?14M for a 29 year old player. When Vieira returned to Highbury in Juventus Black & White stripes he & his old boss exchanged a quick handshake, but you sensed they would be at ease talking to each other after the game. I don't think the same could be said of Keane or Van Nistelrooy with Ferguson.

My fear is that Alex Ferguson now thinks he is bigger than Manchester United. In truth nobody is. With all these high profile player sales in the past and continuing 'success', Ferguson, in my opinion, now thinks he does not have anyone to answer to. His difficult relationship with the media and sometimes-embarrassing stance on certain situations (the doctorate he wrote on Arsenal's behaviour at Old Trafford in 2003 & sent to the FA in Soho square) taint the genius that helped to build this great club from 1986 to 2003. But the flaws in his character are more prevalent now than ever. When asked if he was worried about the Glazer's ?540M debt, he replied 'why should I worry?' Well that response makes me worry as it gave me the impression that if Old Trafford goes into meltdown like Leeds did, Fergie will retire to the golf course or to race meetings leaving people like us, the fans who love the club to see our memories torn apart, our hearts broken. When journalists recently asked about FC United Ferguson refused to talk to them. Had he just said 'well done' and acknowledged their existence he could have won back a little bit of respect & popularity. But it wasn't to be.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy sums up everything good & bad about Alex Ferguson. While Ruud had only played in the Dutch league & was untried anywhere else, Ferguson did spot the finishing power of a superb player and even waited for a year after injury, to finally land him. Fergie changed our formation to play with Ruud. It was meant to make us more potent and although the players didn't like the new formation, it brought us within a whisker of the 2002 Champions League final. Long-term Ferguson's perseverance with this formation proved catastrophic. 2002 aside United's Champions League record since Ruud's arrival & the formation change, got progressively worse. Finally in December 2005 first round elimination & even the failure to reach the trapdoor of the UEFA cup finally woke up Fergie to see that his formation was not working in Europe and had allowed the other sides to catch up at home too. The problem was it took him four and a half years to spot this. At any other club he would have been lucky to get one year. While I firmly believe we were England's top side in the 2002/2003 season two things aided us: Beckham's seemingly endless number of assists or crosses that led to United goals and Giggs playing just off Ruud to net 12 goals for himself & help Ruud notch 44. Then Beckham signed for Madrid and Giggs was returned to the left wing. If it's not broken...

When he retires, Fergie will be remembered as an absolute legend. There is no question about that. I've never thought him a tactical genius - In my mind's eye I can still see that Charlton FA Cup game in 1994 when Schmeichel got sent off and Fergie rushed to take off Hughes, only for Brian Kidd to stop him & have a chat. Five minutes into the second half Hughes had put us 1-0 up as the withdrawn Paul Parker was having his shower. Fergie has always needed a trusty lieutenant as his number two. That said it is most definite in my lifetime that I've not seen anyone do a better management job anywhere in world football than Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford. Now, the summer of 2006 brings the World Cup & puts Ruud in the shop window. Apparently Ruud reduced Ronaldo to tears in training with an unfortunate choice of words. I wonder would any of the players of 94 like Hughes, Cantona, Keane, Ince, Schmeichel or Bruce have been reduced to tears? More likely a dust up would have ensued with everyone going for a pint afterwards & just getting on with it.

Everyone makes mistakes. Just like Ince, Stam, Beckham & Ruud, Fergie has made mistakes. The difference is, it looks like nobody is going to show Fergie the door.

United finished second in the title race to the Blues this season and will be hoping to go one better next term.

But with the champions already having added Michael Ballack to their squad for next season, the pressure is now on Fergie to succeed in the transfer market.

And the Glazer family, who own United following their takeover last summer, say they are willing to back the Scot all the way.

"If Sir Alex Ferguson really wants a certain player then the Glazers would be willing to push whatever button required to get that player," a spokesman for the Americans told the Manchester Evening News.

The paper says Lyon's Mahamadou Diarra, Juan Roman Riquelme of Villarreal, Jean Makoun (Lille), Aldo Duscher (Deportivo La Coruna) and Brazilian club Corinthian's Javier Mascherano are all potential midfield targets.

But Lyon want a whopping £24million for Mali international Diarra.

United fans have feared since the takeover that the club would struggle to compete in the market with estimated debts of £540million.

Edwin van der Sar, Ji-sung Park, Nemanja Vidic and Patrice Evra have all come in since at a cost of around £18million.

"The debt has no bearing on expenditure," the Glazer's spokesman continued. "The money available for the transfer budget comes out of cash flow from the club. There is cash around and a portion of that can go towards transfer fees.

"Of course the only way to demonstrate that to the fans is by spending money during the summer for the players the manager identifies. We will have to wait and see what happens on that."

Hope that old man don't disappoint us again this season.

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admits he has been forced to look abroad in a bid to fill the void left by Roy Keane's departure last December.

Over the past 25 years, United have relied on the battling qualities of Bryan Robson, Keane and, to a lesser extent, Paul Ince to provide the driving force from midfield.

However, Ferguson believes there are no such players available in Britain at the moment.

Lyon's £24million-rated midfielder Mahamadou Diarra is reportedly top of Ferguson's wanted list, while Villarreal playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme and Valencia's Aldo Duscher have also been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

But while Ferguson hopes he can recruit a foreign replacement to match Keane's playing ability, the United boss accepts finding one with the same leadership qualities will be almost impossible.

Ferguson told MUTV: 'It's not easy to replace Roy Keane, just as it wasn't when Bryan Robson came to the end of his career. We looked for a new Bryan Robson and fortunately we were very lucky to get Roy Keane.

'That scenario is on us again. We've got to get a Roy Keane and we've got to complete that quest in terms of getting that type of player who can influence not just the dressing room but also on the field

'We have some ideas in mind in that respect, maybe not exactly a Roy Keane-type but players who would add to the midfield.

'One of the benefits of Roy was, even though he was from the Republic of Ireland, it was like he was British, so there was no problem in terms of his culture and the language. He was a Manchester lad really, we brought him here from Nottingham at a young age.

'In the present situation where we're looking for a Roy Keane there is no-one, absolutely no-one, of that type in the English game. There are some good players in the English game but not a Roy Keane-type.

'So when we look abroad we have to take into consideration that he's not going to be a Roy Keane in terms of his influence in the dressing room because of culture, language, things like that.

'It will be a different type of player but hopefully it will be somebody who has the qualities that we need.'

I hope he will get Patrick Vieira as Roy Keane replacement. Heard Juventus get themselves into trouble, all the board members had resigned, if found guilty, they may drop to Serie B and strip of their title immediately, then all Juventus players will be sold for raising funds. :)

The Reds are desperate to boost their squad in a bid to challenge Chelsea for the Premiership title next season.

And they see the 18-year-old Cruzeiro attacking starlet as the perfect man to add star quality to their ranks.

According to The Times, a United delegation flew to South America this week to meet officials from the club.

And they are hopeful of signing the man dubbed "the new Ronaldinho" in the next few days.

United have also inquired about signing Edu Dracena, the 24-year-old Cruzeiro captain and central defender.

"We are always ready to listen to offers for Kerlon," Zezé Perrella, the Cruzeiro vice-president, told the broadsheet.

"We have had a lot of interest in him and we have been in close contact with an English team, but right now we are not there on the money."

Kerlon is understood to have caught the eye of United boss Sir Alex Ferguson while playing for Brazil in the South American Under-17 Championship in Venezuela last year.

Peter Schmeichel, Denis Irwin, Ryan Giggs and Eric Cantona were chosen by readers of thefa.com who also voted Sir Alex as the side's manager.

The search for the Heroes Team began at the start of the year when the FA asked the 92 Premier League and Football League clubs, plus the top 33 non-league clubs in the FA Cup to nominate their five Cup heroes.

An FA panel, chaired by Sir Trevor Brooking and including ex-United midfielder Ray Wilkins and Sky commentator Martin Tyler, narrowed the list of 625 players down to 100. 25 managers were also selected.

Fans voted for their favourite team (in a 4-3-3 formation) which also includes the likes of Bobby Moore, Stanley Matthews and Gary Lineker.

Ruud van Nistelrooy has admitted he simply cannot understand why his Manchester United career appears to be in ruins.

The prolific striker seems certain to have played his last game for the Red Devils following an amazing fall-out with Sir Alex Ferguson prior to the final Premiership game against Charlton earlier this month which led the United boss to order Van Nistelrooy out of the team hotel.

That bust-up followed Ferguson's decision to repeatedly omit Van Nistelrooy - one of only eight players to score 150 goals for the Old Trafford outfit - in favour of Louis Saha and finally Giuseppe Rossi over the latter weeks of the campaign.

Without some unexpected twist, the 29-year-old will be putting himself into the shop window when he turns out for Holland in the World Cup this summer.

And, while reports of a training ground row with Cristiano Ronaldo have neither been confirmed nor denied by player or club, Van Nistelrooy is at a total loss to comprehend why he looks like being forced out of the club he loves.

'I know a lot of people in Manchester don't understand it, well it is the same for me,' he said. 'I love Manchester United. That is why I don't really understand it.

'What has happened has happened. I have a World Cup in front of me, so I need to try and forget about it and move on.

'But one thing I want to make clear is that I went (from the hotel) because I had to go, not because I went myself.'

Van Nistelrooy has not spoken to Ferguson since his row with the Scot, during which the forward was also told he would not be welcome at Roy Keane's testimonial, a match he was desperate to play in due to his close friendship with the Irishman, who departed United in controversial circumstances himself in November.

However, some of the former PSV Eindhoven star's Old Trafford colleagues have been rather more forthcoming, making contact which Van Nistelrooy appreciates.

'I have been in touch with a few team-mates,' he said. 'That was nice and gave me a good feeling.'

With two years on a contract worth an estimated £90,000 a week still to run, Van Nistelrooy is understandably keen to stress his days at United are not necessarily over.

In practice, however, the scramble for his services is already on with Chelsea, Inter and AC Milan, Tottenham and Newcastle among the clubs who have been linked with a player who has scored an incredible 47 Champions League goals.

'I have two years left on my contract and if things stay the way they are at the moment I will still be at the club next season,' he said.

'But I am not naive and the fact I wasn't involved in the last Premiership game or Roy Keane's testimonial was not a good sign, but nothing is going to happen until after the World Cup.'

Although he could have been forgiven for carrying the worries of the world on his shoulders as he pushed himself through the first day of training at Holland's World Cup camp in Switzerland, Van Nistelrooy was actually very relaxed.

Coach Marco Van Basten has already assured the forward he remains an integral part of his planning for an arduous group phase which pits the Netherlands against Serbia and Montenegro, the Ivory Coast and Argentina.

And the confidence generated by the support he has conspicuously failed to receive from his club manager since Ferguson axed him for the Carling Cup Final victory over Wigan in February, leaves Van Nistelrooy looking ahead to this weekend's friendly tussle with Cameroon in Rotterdam with an air of optimism.

'Of course it is easy to concentrate on my football,' he said. 'We have the World Cup coming up. I don't feel there is more pressure on me because I know Marco van Basten has confidence in me, as do the other coaches, my team-mates and the supporters, which is all I need.

'I actually feel quite good. I have come into a team that is very motivated to do well. I am part of that and I feel happy with it.

'In that sense, I can forget what happened and try to move on, which is what I am doing.'

This week in United history includes the birthdates of Sir Matt Busby, Eric Cantona and George Best, who would have been 60 years old on Monday...

22 May

1946 - The birth of the late George Best, quite simply the best footballer that Britain has ever produced. A player of unfathomable natural talent on the field and a shy but effortlessly cool dude off it, he brought rock 'n' roll to football for the first time in an era when most of his peers were about as box office as a fish supper.

1999 - The second part of the Treble. Despite having Nicky Butt in cotton wool and Roy Keane in absentia after an early Gary Speed tackle, United disposed of Newcastle with such ease that Gary Neville said "it was like a practice match". Fittingly, two of United's classiest technicians, Teddy Sheringham and Paul Scholes, made and scored a goal each in the Reds' 2-0 win.

2004 - Cup finals don't come any easier than this. Nobody really expected First Division side Millwall to trouble the Reds and, though they held out bravely for 44 minutes, they eventually succumbed 3-0 to goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Ruud van Nistelrooy (two).

23 May

1996 - Gary and Phil Neville played together for England against China, thus equalling a 120-year-old record. Not since 1876, and Frank and Hubert Heron of The Wanderers, had two brothers played together in an FA Cup-final winning side and for England in the same season.

24 May

1966 - Happy 40th birthday to the one and only Eric Cantona. Le Roi's United reign was a relatively short one - less than five years - but hugely significant: his work ethic, swagger and sheer class were the catalyst for the most successful period in the Reds' history. From the moment he arrived at Old Trafford he puffed his chest out, turned his collar up and made idiots of primitive Premiership defences. As long as there is a Manchester United, somebody somewhere will be singing the 12 Days of Cantona.

25 May

1963 - The Reds beat Leicester 3-1 in the FA Cup final, with goals from Denis Law and David Herd (two). At the time it was a surprise - United had finished 19th, Leicester fourth - but the achievements of Matt Busby's team would never shock again: within two years the Reds were champions of England; in five they were champions of Europe.

26 May

1909 - The birth of Sir Matt Busby, the father figure whose genteel genius was behind three brilliant United sides: the 1948 FA Cup winners; the Busby Babes; and finally the European Cup-winning vintage of 1968. If there has ever been a better man in football, nobody has met him.

1983 - It is a truism that, in big cup matches, underdogs rarely get a second chance, and United proved the point by mauling Brighton 4-0 in this FA Cup final replay. Bryan Robson scored two and Norman Whiteside another before half-time; then, when Robson was pulled back while through on goal, he declined the opportunity of a cup final hat-trick and allowed Arnold Muhren to feather home the penalty.

1999 - Is it really seven years ago since United reached the promised land? The memories of that night in Barcelona are as vivid as ever: Basler's early goal, Bayern hitting bar and post, three added minutes, Schmeichel coming forward, Linke's shank, Giggs' miscued volley, Teddy's finish; then Ole winning a corner, Teddy rising majestically to flick it on, Ole's foot jutting out to ram it in, Kuffour bashing the ground in frustration, Bayern bodies strewn across the turf like the set of a gangster movie; then, finally, the final whistle that confirmed United as European champions - and the first side from any of Europe's big leagues to ever do the Treble. Seven years ago? Bloody hell.

27 May

1971 - Happy 35th birthday to the eternally young Lee Sharpe, whose dash, daring and lust for life lit up Old Trafford in the first half of the 1990s - particularly in 1990/91, when he took the Young Player of the Year award at 19 and scored a famous hat-trick in the Reds' 6-2 win at Highbury.

28 May

1956 - The FA invited United to represent England in the following season's European Cup. It was an invitation Sir Matt accepted, and his side blazed a trail for the rest of England to follow in what would become club football's greatest competition.

Another fallout with Sir Alex: :(

Manchester United doctor Mike Stone has left Old Trafford following a major bust-up with Sir Alex Ferguson.

Just 24 hours before Wayne Rooney is due to have the scan which will either make or break his hopes of appearing in this summer's World Cup, it has emerged that Stone, the man under whom the brilliant forward was being treated, has had his employment with United terminated with immediate effect.

Red Devils officials are insistent Stone's departure has nothing to do with Rooney's recovery from the broken metatarsal he suffered at Chelsea last month.

However, with details over the reasons behind the dispute with Ferguson still sketchy, speculation the problem stems from something to do with Rooney is bound to be rife.

Given the cautious tone he adopted over the 20-year-old's chances of playing in Germany this summer, Ferguson has presumably grown increasingly unhappy at the number of positive bulletins being released on Rooney's condition.

Although most of the statements have been attributed to the England doctor Leif Sward, Stone has been liaising closely with the Swede.

The growing clamour for Rooney to be included in Sven-Goran Eriksson's final 23-man World Cup squad flies in the face of Ferguson's own belief that the £27million former Everton star should not travel unless he is 100% fit.

According to the Scot, anything else would place Eriksson under increasing pressure to play Rooney and risk longer-term damage to his star man.

Given the importance to United of Rooney being fit for the start of next season, it would be understandable if Ferguson found the present upbeat mood irritating, possibly triggering an argument over an unrelated matter which led to confirmation of Stone's departure in a club statement.

'We can confirm Dr Stone has left the club,' read the statement. 'There was a difference of opinion on a non-footballing and non-clinical issue, as a result of which Dr Stone felt it to be in his and the club's best interests for him to leave.

'The difference was over a non-clinical issue and had nothing whatsoever to do with any medical treatment to a Manchester United player.'

Stone's departure means Rooney's care will now be handled by his assistant Tony Gill, who is now expected to be officially installed as United's club doctor.

The dismissal has been greeted with shock and some sense of sadness within Red Devils circles, where Stone has been a popular figure among both players and staff since his arrival in 1999.

Senior figures at the club - including Ferguson - stood by Stone over the Rio Ferdinand missed drugs test fiasco in 2003, when he elected to try to get a message to the defender that he was required for to take a test rather than ensure he attended it personally.

The loyalty shown at that time only makes his exit even more of a shock.

Cambiasso's name is the latest to be added to the list of potential midfield recruits at Old Trafford this summer.

Ferguson is keen to make significant improvements to the team's engine room as they bid to overcome the loss of Roy Keane.

Cambiasso is currently with Italian giants Inter Milan, who have been linked with United's out-of-favour Ruud van Nistelrooy in the past week.

And according to reports, Cambiasso could be part of a potential swap deal sending van Nistelrooy to the San Siro.

Inter are understood to be keen on the Dutchman, but probably wouldn't be able to afford the £12million transfer fee.

Inter owner Massimo Morati is reluctant to let Cambiasso go and was initially believed to have rejected the idea but if United insist that it is the only way a deal couild be brokered then the Italians may well relent.

Cambiasso had first sprung to European prominence with Real Madrid, before joining Inter.

Manchester United are lining up a sensational swoop for Juventus' former Arsenal hardman Patrick Vieira, according to reports. The Juve midfielder is concerned with the current match-fixing investigation which could result in the Italian champions being relegated to Seria B. Vieira is not comfortable with the current situation and has also recently been linked with a return to Arsenal but has refused to comment on his future. Sir Alex Ferguson has long been a keen admirer of Vieira and desperately wants to add quality to the midfield area. He has been unable to find a perfect replacement since Roy Keane's departure to Celtic last season, but may well see Vieira as the man to fill the hole. However, with Arsenal also sniffing, along with several Spanish clubs, United will have to move quickly if they are to pull off the shock move. But if Juventus are relegated to Seria B then the French international will almost certainly want a move away after just one season in Italy. :D

Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo confirmed Sunday that he is a target for Real Madrid, according to Portuguese newspaper A Bola.

The 21-year-old, who scored the decisive penalty for Portugal in their FIFA World Cup™ quarter-final victory over England Saturday, was asked whether it was true he was being pursued by the Spanish giants.

"Yes, it's true," he replied. "But I will only make a comment on that after the World Cup. Now is not the time to do it."

Earlier in the week, Real Madrid presidential candidate Juan Miguel Villar Mir had said he would bring Ronaldo to the Bernabeu if he wins the election. The English Premiership club responded by describing that as nothing more than electioneering. "Cristiano Ronaldo has signed a long-term contract with Manchester United, which runs until 2010. He will be a Manchester United player next season," said the club in a statement. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson also dismissed Mir's comments in an interview with MUTV. "Over the years when people have been involved in a bid to become president at Madrid they've used clubs like ours," he said.

Cristiano Ronaldo has brushed off the suggestion he tried to get Wayne Rooney sent off during England's World Cup quarter final defeat to Portugal on penalties.

Rooney shown a straight red in the 62nd minute of a tense clash in Gelsenkirchen for a stamp on Ricardo Carvalho.

After the incident Ronaldo ran over to demand the referee take action. Rooney subsequently pushed Ronaldo away, believing his United team-mate to be attempting to get him sent off.

However, Ronaldo insists that wasn't the case and is adamant he and Rooney are “friends”.

"The English press say the referee gave a red card because I spoke [to him], but this is not true,” he said after the match.

"I said 'ref this is foul' but I did not say 'red card' because Wayne is my friend and I play at the same team as him."

Departing England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson urged the English press not to be too hard on Rooney following his dismissal.

"If he did it with intention or not, leave it - you need him for the qualification games and to win Euro 2008. I have no hard feelings."

Real Madrid are weighing up a bid for Ruud van Nistelrooy - which will be bad news for Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo, 21, is desperate to quit Manchester United to avoid a hate campaign in the wake of his role in Wayne Rooney's red card against Portugal last weekend. But the winger has also had a long-running feud with Dutch striker van Nistelrooy at Old Trafford. New Real president Ramon Calderon admitted: "Van Nistelrooy is another of our options and so is Ronaldo. It depends on what Fabio Capello decides."

Manchester United have declared their intention to keep hold of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The future of the Portugal winger has been the subject of intense speculation over the past three weeks, with the 21-year-old twice claiming he would like to move to Spain.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson initially suggested he would try to keep Ronaldo at Old Trafford and those comments have been reinforced by the Old Trafford outfit this morning.

'Manchester United has noticed the increasing media speculation over the future of Cristiano Ronaldo,' said a statement released by the Red Devils.

'The club can confirm there is no possibility of Cristiano being sold.

'Cristiano recently signed a new contract until 2010 and the club fully expects him to honour that contract.

'The club will not listen to any offers for Cristiano.

'Cristiano is one of the brightest young stars in world football, as demonstrated by his performances at the World Cup and Manchester United is not in the business of selling their best young players.'

A deal is due to be concluded at some point next month which will see charges on loans fall from £90million per year to £62million.

Although United's overall debt has increased to a massive £660million under the restructuring plan, the club have been able to cut the amount borrowed at huge cost from hedge funds.

'Manchester rang us at the end of last week and asked us if we were prepared to sit down and negotiate,' Villarreal director Jose Manuel Llaneza was quoted as saying in sports daily El Mundo Deportivo on Tuesday.

'If the offer is positive for everyone, then the club will be happy to agree to Marcos leaving. If there is no deal then there will be no problem with him staying at the club.'

The 30-year-old Brazilian-born central midfielder was part of the Spain squad in the World Cup and was a key figure in Villarreal's run to the semi-finals of the Champions League last season.

West Brom boss Bryan Robson admitted on Monday there was no chance of getting Rossi as Ferguson wants the teenager to remain at Old Trafford now Ruud van Nistelrooy has departed for Real Madrid.

However, in leaving Kuszczak out of Albion's trip to Cardiff completely, it seemed obvious a deal was on the cards and a 'complicated' transfer will be concluded within the next 48 hours.

The deal should trigger the departure of Ben Foster to Watford for a second season on loan.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill has confirmed Tomasz Kuszczak has signed a four-year contract with the Old Trafford club.

The Old Trafford outfit announced Kuszczak's arrival from West Brom but curiously failed to state the terms of the deal.

West Brom suggested the 24-year-old had initially signed on loan, with a view to the deal becoming permanent, although Gill has now clarified the situation.

'Tomasz will be a Manchester United player for the next four years,' he said.

'He has come to us on loan for the first year and then will join us permanently in July 2007.

'We would not have been interested in signing any player, even as one as good as Tomasz, on loan. We would hope Tomasz remains a Manchester United player for many years to come.'

Sir Alex Ferguson has been chasing Kuszczak for most of the summer.

Bayern Munich midfielder Owen Hargreaves claims to have received an offer to join United.

The 25-year-old, who will appear for England against Greece at Old Trafford on Wednesday night, has made no secret of his desire to move to the Premiership.

After weeks of rumours tipping him for a move to United, Hargreaves told German newspaper Bild that he is ready to complete the switch.

"The offer from Manchester United is fantastic," he said. "It's especially enticing for me as an England international, and you never know if the opportunity will present itself again.

"Now it's time for me to take the next step and develop myself further. Herr [Dieter] Hoeness knows what a unique opportunity this is for me."

Bayern coach Felix Magath, however, is loathe to sell the versatile midfielder, who was voted England's best player at the World Cup. "Selling Hargreaves has never been on our agenda," he said recently.

Manchester United 5 Fulham 1

Chris Coleman's beleaguered troops made a decent start at Old Trafford but soon fell behind when former Craven Cottage favourite Louis Saha powerfully headed home Ryan Giggs' precise cross after seven minutes.

The unfortunate Ian Pearce then slid Saha's cross through his own net under pressure from Rooney seven minutes later at the start of three goals in four minutes for the dominant Red Devils.

Rooney then got his first on 16 minutes when he drilled home after Antti Niemi could only parry Saha's volley, before Ronaldo took advantage of some woeful defending to volley home the fourth with just 19 minutes on the clock.

Paul Scholes then hit a post with a 25-yard strike with the rebound striking the back of Niemi's head before the Finnish goalkeeper recovered to scoop the ball off the line.

Fulham looked shell-shocked but got on the scoresheet themselves five minutes before the interval when Heidar Helguson's shot hit Rio Ferdinand's chest and looped over the stranded Edwin van der Sar.

The second half was always going to prove a formality and despite the introduction of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the Reds only added one further goal to their tally when Man of the Match Rooney collected Wes Brown's cross and drilled a first-time effort low into the corner of Niemi's goal.

Tevez request puts United on red alert

Manchester United target Carlos Tevez has revealed he wants to quit Corinthians for a move to Europe after falling out with the Brazilian club.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is a long-term admirer of the Argentinian striker and could now make a move.

Tevez demanded a transfer after falling out with new coach and former Brazil goalkeeper Emerson Leao.

The pair clashed after Tevez was stripped of the club captaincy because he cannot speak Portuguese.

Tevez is valued at around £25million and United will face stiff competition for his signature from Bayern Munich and AC Milan.

He said: "This may have been my last game in the Corinthians shirt.

"I would like to stay but I have to think about what is better for me and my family."

His agent Adrian Ruocco confirmed: "Carlos wants to go to Europe."

Ferguson may hold the upper hand in the race to sign the World Cup star, given he has already admitted he supports the club and once turned up to a Corinthians press conference wearing a Manchester United strip.

Charlton Athletic 0 Manchester United 3

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson saluted Cristiano Ronaldo and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the heroes of their 3-0 win at Charlton in the absence of suspended Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes.

Fergie said: 'The advantage is that Chelsea have lost but after just two games you cannot talk about (winning) the league yet. But of course we have the will to do it, we have the players to do it and without question we have the spirit in the camp to do it.

'It was a great performance at Charlton, nobody can deny that. I was a bit concerned about the game when a few players missed out through injuries and suspension.

'But we have a lot of maturity there now with players like Ronaldo, (Darren) Fletcher and Park Ji-Sung growing up.

'Ronaldo looked more mature - and was fantastic tonight. It is always a tough game at The Valley and we had to wear them down. We were frustrated when we hit the post and the crossbar but then got a goal out of nothing.

'And it was a great night for the fans and the staff when Solskjaer scored. He has had a tough few years but we never lost faith and he got his rewards.'

New Charlton boss Iain Dowie saw his team suffer their second defeat of the campaign and admitted: 'They (United) played well tonight. They are a match for anybody in the country like that but the manner of the goals we conceded was disappointing.

'Fletcher took advantage of Jon Fortune's slip and we were always chasing the game. We changed our shape in midfield but didn't work hard enough at passing the ball.

'And at key moments we switched off defensively. They have key players who can hurt you when you did that. I was at their 5-1 win over Fulham on Sunday and knew we would face problems. They zip the ball about and rotate very well.'

After the Champions League draw,

Manchester United chief executive David Gill expects a deafening atmosphere at Old Trafford and Parkhead as the Red Devils go toe to toe with Celtic in the Champions League.

The two clashes in Group A will be among the highlights of the competition before the knock-out stages get under way early next year.

United get a quick chance for revenge against Benfica, who knocked them out in last season's group stage, while Danish side FC Copenhagen round off the group.

However, it is the `Battle of Britain' clashes which will be the most eagerly awaited in Manchester and Glasgow.

Gill told Sky Sports News: 'It's a great draw. It's great for the fans and great for the manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

'We have not played against Celtic in a competitive fixture - the last time (the two sides met) was back in May when we played in Roy (Keane)'s testimonial.

'The atmosphere that night was fantastic, now we've got a competitive fixture I'm sure it will go up many, many decibels.

'We're looking forward to Benfica, they put us out of the competition last year, so it's a chance for revenge, and we've obviously got a great history and tradition with them (United beat them to win the European Cup in 1968).'

Gill insisted relations were good between United and Celtic, adding: 'We get on very well at all levels. That relationship has stood the test of time, but this is the first competitive meeting, so we'll see.

'Any club wants to go as far as we can. We want to be in the Champions League, we have got the squad, the stadium and the fans to be in the Champions League and we're looking forward to a great competition this year, we went out much too early last year.'

Manchester United stayed at the top of the Premiership thanks to their third straight victory - and gave newcomers Watford a tough lesson about life at the top.
http://soccernet-att.espn.go.com/design05/images/JonMC/carrick_king_205.jpg

With the match level at 1-1, Watford missed a marvellous chance to take the lead, and were promptly punished when Ryan Giggs - outstanding throughout in the visitors' midfield - seized on substitute Matthew Spring's wayward back pass to score the winner after 51 minutes.
Mikael Silvestre had earlier finished off a brilliant move involving Giggs and Louis Saha to put United in front in the 13th minute, but this Watford side possess an unquenchable competitive spirit, and they overcame their clear technical inferiority to equalise through Damien Francis 21 minutes later.
This victory puts United six points clear of champions Chelsea, who are already under pressure and play at Blackburn on Sunday.
Michael Carrick made his first league start for United since his £18.6million move from Tottenham earlier in the summer, while Richard Lee started in goal for Watford as Ben Foster was ineligible under the terms of his loan move from Old Trafford.

Watford began with the same purpose and tenacity that characterised their 1-1 draw with West Ham in midweek and, briefly, Sir Alex Ferguson's side looked rattled.
But having negotiated the opening stages, United began to make their superior passing and movement tell.
Carrick's curling cross in the 10th minute forced Lee to back-pedal quickly and tip over, and from Ryan Giggs' resulting right-wing corner Cristiano Ronaldo - predictably booed by the home supporters - headed just wide of the left post from six yards.
United had to wait only two more minutes before they took the lead with a goal of beautiful simplicity.
Giggs made a menacing run from inside his own half before releasing Louis Saha, who slipped the ball to his left for Silvestre to burst into the penalty area and drill an angled, left-footed shot just inside the right post.
In the 27th minute, Lee made a stunning save to deny Saha, who found space at the near post to direct Giggs' fiercely swerving corner towards goal with his head.
Watford boss Adrian Boothroyd, perhaps recognising the visitors' superiority in midfield, brought off wide man Hameur Bouazza and sent on Spring to give his team more bite and resolve in the centre of the pitch.

The move paid off within three minutes as Watford - who had shown superb spirit when United were at their most dangerous - equalised in the 34th minute. The impressive Ashley Young tricked his way past Silvestre on the right and drove the ball low across the face of goal where Francis, whose run from midfield had gone untracked, tapped in his second goal in three matches since his summer move from Wigan.
Watford made a bright start to the second half - but were quickly given a demonstration of the ruthlessness which is required to survive and prosper in the Premiership. In the 51st minute, Watford should have taken the lead - and paid the ultimate penalty when they fell behind 60 seconds later.
Only Dan Shittu and Francis will know why they failed to pounce after Darius Henderson had steered Marlon King's deflected free-kick back across the face of the United goal, with keeper Edwin van der Sar stranded. The pair - perhaps believing they were off-side - simply stood and watched instead of intervening, and they were quickly punished for their error by Giggs. Collecting Spring's under-hit back pass, the Welshman evaded goalkeeper Lee with remarkable ease before steering the ball into the empty net with his right foot. Watford won a number of free-kicks and throw-ins in dangerous areas, as well as corners, but they could not make them count as United held firm in defence. The visitors almost netted a third with 18 minutes remaining, but Watford keeper Lee reached Ronaldo's through-ball a split second before Park. While Watford pressed forward, United would always look dangerous on the break, and Lee denied Ronaldo once more with an assured save from the ex-Sporting Lisbon man's left-footed strike from 20 yards. Saha should have made the game safe in the 88th minute after being supplied superbly by Giggs, but Lee - who had done his cause no harm - was quickly out of his goal to block the France international, while at the other end Shittu fired over in stoppage time.

The France international is now available for transfer following the Serie A match-fixing scandal which resulted in the club's demotion to Serie B and both United and Lyon are in the hunt along with a host of Italian clubs.
And rumours of his exit increased further on Sunday when he was left out of Juve's line-up which lost to Napoli on penalities in the Coppa Italia.
Although Trezeguet had been struggling for match fitness prior to the game, the result has now ended their hopes of qualifying for European competition next season and this could well prompt the likes of United to move in.
Ferguson is still searching for a replacement for Ruud van Nistelrooy, who left Old Trafford for Real Madrid in the summer, and Trezeguet is thought to be at the top of his wish list with the transfer deadline day looming.
United will have to act fast to sign the 28-year-old before Thursday but with the club top of the Premiership with three wins out of three there seems no need to panic.
Reports suggest Trezeguet could cost as much as £17million and despite claims from Juventus officials, he is yet to publicly declare his commitment to the Bianconeri for the coming season.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is a long-term admirer of Trezeguet and wants to add the Frenchman to his squad in the next couple of days, according to various newspaper reports.
Trezeguet wants to leave the Turin giants after they were relegated to Serie B for their part in the Italian match-fixing scandal.
It is understood the player's father, who also acts as his agent, has already met with United officials to discuss a possible move.
The Red Devils are in the driving seat to land the striker, but may face competition from French champions Lyon who have money to spend after selling midfielder Mahamadou Diarra to Real Madrid for £16million.
Trezeguet scored 23 goals in 32 Serie A games last season but failed to maka an impression at the World Cup for France.

Rossi loaned to Newcastle until January

Manchester United have loaned Italian youngster Giuseppe Rossi to Newcastle. The Magpies, stricken by injury to Michael Owen as well as the retirement of Alan Shearer, have borrowed the 19-year-old, who originally hails from New Jersey but has so far chosen to represent the country of his parents. Newcastle have agreed terms with the Premiership leaders to take Rossi on loan until 1 January 2007. The Italian striker will link up with the Magpies immediately and, according to Sir Alex Ferguson, will gain some invaluable first team experience. 'It was a big decision for us especially as we don't have the choice of strikers,' admitted the United boss.

'But this is something that Giuseppe wanted as he needs regular first team football. 'When he returns he will be a more experienced player who will be able to offer us much more.'

Manchester United are not expected to make any new signings before the transfer window closes tomorrow after Sir Alex Ferguson effectively conceded defeat in his attempts to sign Owen Hargreaves.

Bayern Munich have blocked United's efforts to bring the England midfielder to Old Trafford, and after the club's 100% start to the season Ferguson is not anxious for other new blood. It is also understood that the United manager will not move for French striker David Trezeguet, who is desperate to leave Juventus. Hargreaves, meanwhile, has not endeared himself to his Bayern team-mates by expressing his desire to move to United despite only a few months ago having signed a new contract to stay in Munich until 2010.

Bayern goalkeeper Oliver Kahn said the Canadian-born midfielder should concentrate on his career in Germany.

'You cannot just sign a new three or four-year contract and then disappear at the first opportunity,' Kahn told DSF television.

'You have got to be professional, perform as best you can, show a reaction and give it 100%. 'After all, football is not a concert in which you get to pick your favourite songs.' Kahn has also commended his club for standing firm against the interest from Manchester United.

He added: 'We want to reach our aims and we need all the good players we have got. 'We would definitely be ill-advised to give a player like Owen Hargreaves to our rivals like Manchester, AC Milan and the other big teams.'

Meanwhile, United striker Louis Saha believes the summer sale of former team-mate Ruud van Nistelrooy to Real Madrid has weakened his club and strengthened their rivals. Saha is convinced the Dutchman's departure is a bad thing for his club - even if it has given him the first-team chances he had lacked since arriving from Fulham in January 2004.

'When you lose a player capable of scoring 40 goals in one season, I don't think that giving him to Real Madrid is a good thing, considering we will face them at one point or another,' said Saha.

'It is true that his departure will certainly allow me to play a little bit more and I take Sir Alex Ferguson's trust as a compliment, but I have always done my best whether Ruud is there or not. Nothing has changed for me.'

Van Nistelrooy was gradually phased out of Ferguson's starting XI following Saha's dazzling return after enduring a lengthy absence because of a right knee injury.

'Things can go very fast, if I am not good enough someone else will take my place,' added the 28-year-old, who has two goals in three league games this season.

'If I am good I try to hold onto my status and work hard. Competition makes you progress, always.'

FC came into existence in the summer of 2005 in protest at the Glazer family's purchase of the Old Trafford giants.
Since then, they have attracted crowds of up to 6,000 and taken non-league football by storm.
But according to the Manchester Evening News, Ferguson has labelled the founding fans self-publicists in a new book.
He said of the formation of the new club in 'The Official Manchester United Diary of the Season': "I'm sorry about that. It's a bit sad that part, but I wonder just how big a United supporter they are.
"They seem to me to be promoting or projecting themselves a wee bit rather than saying 'at the end of the day, the club have made a decision, we'll stick by them.' It's more about them than us."
And he also appears to dismiss the notion of supporters having a say in the running of a football club.
An FC United spokesperson told the paper: "It's sad that Sir Alex Ferguson has chosen to make these comments because a war of words does no-one any good.
"When David Gill made similar comments, it was easier to dismiss, but it's hard to swallow when it comes from Sir Alex, who as a previous champion of supporters' rights should have a better understanding of the situation.
"The situation is that whether fans stopped going to Old Trafford on a point of principle or because they could no longer afford the prices, they did so with a heavy heart and remain Manchester United supporters. Those supporters deserve better than this."

United’s promising start to the season saw the Reds do the double in August, with Sir Alex Ferguson being named Barclays Manager of the Month and Ryan Giggs receiving the Player of the Month award.

Sir Alex expressed his desire for United to begin the campaign positively, and his players responded with three victories, winning 5-1 against Fulham, 3-0 at Charlton and 2-1 against Watford.
Giggs has been instrumental in all three matches, particularly in the absence of Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes against Charlton and Watford, where he scored the winning goal.
The Welshman will be 33 in November, but, amazingly, it is the first time he has won the award in his 15-year United career. In stark contrast, this is the 17th time Sir Alex has won the Manager of the Month award.
The accolades are voted for by the Barclays Awards Panel, which includes representatives from football's governing bodies, the media and fans.

United go back to the top
Manchester United made it four wins out of four to return to the Premiership summit yesterday evening.

Manchester United made their best ever start to the Premiership season after clinching a 1-0 victory against a Spurs side who frequently threatened at Old Trafford. The win was United's fourth in four games but was not without anxious moments for the home side. Ryan Giggs scored the decisive goal but poor finishing from both Mido and Defoe denied Tottenham a share of the points.

Despite Bayern Munich's concession that they may consider selling Owen Hargreaves, United have been linked with another English midfielder.

Blackburn star David Bentley has caught the eye of Sir Alex Ferguson's scouts, according to the Daily Mirror, and could be a shock January arrival if no move for Hargreaves materialises.

The biggest name tipped to leave Old Trafford in the transfer window is Argentine defender Gabriel Heinze, who has apparently alerted AC Milan, Valencia and Bayern Munich.

Reports suggest Bayern's interest could lead to a swap deal involving Hargreaves, who is set to return from his broken leg in the next fortnight.

Heinze's mooted departure could pave the way for more tabloid rumours to bear fruit, with the arrival of 17-year-old Southampton left-back Gareth Bale.

The Welsh international youngster is highly rated, with United, Liverpool, Arsenal and even Real Madrid tipped to test the Saints' resolve this month.

Sir Alex Ferguson is also tipped to rival Rafa Benitez for another youngster, 16-year-old Hamilton Academicals midfielder James McCarthy, over the coming weeks.

Elsewhere, Alan Smith is an alleged loan target for Bolton and Everton, while speculation abounds over the futures of Wes Brown, John O'Shea and Kieran Richardson.

Chinese international Dong Fangzhuo has signed a new contract with the Reds until 2010 and is now eligible to play for United.

Dong, a tall, athletic and speedy forward, will wear the number 21 shirt at Old Trafford and will become the first ever Chinese player to play for the Reds when he makes his competitive debut.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has described his eligibility to play as "exciting".

"We're all excited he has eventually arrived and can start playing," he told ManUtd.com. "He sacrificed two and a half years at Royal Antwerp, which showed great patience and determination.

"He is quick and athletic and he can only improve by training with the first team squad here."

The 21-year-old striker signed for United from Dalian Shide in January 2004 and has since spent two years on loan with Belgian side Royal Antwerp.

At Antwerp, he scored an impressive 35 goals in 61 games. Now, having secured a work permit to play in England, he can begin playing competitive matches.

He has pulled on the red shirt before during pre-season friendlies. Last summer he scored the winning goal against Kaizer Chiefs in Cape Town as part of United's tour of South Africa.

Barcelona have played down reports linked United with a surprise big-money move for Catalan midfielder Xavi Hernandez.

The Spanish international was reportedly a shock alternative transfer target to Bayern Munich and England star Owen Hargreaves.

However, a Barca spokesman told Sky Sports: "We do not know about this subject. Normally the club does not respond to stories published in the papers but we have not received any offer. Xavi is a key man for us and has signed a contract until 2010."

Bayern Munich's changeable stance on the future of Hargreaves has prompted the tabloids to focus on alternative targets for Sir Alex Ferguson, including Xavi, Bordeaux's Rio Antonio Mavuba and Blackburn's David Bentley.

The most surprising name linked with Old Trafford thus far has to be that of Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor. The News of the World claims the Togo striker will be offered a new deal to ward off United's interest.

The biggest name tipped to leave Old Trafford in the transfer window is Argentine defender Gabriel Heinze, who has apparently alerted Juventus, AC Milan and Valencia.

Heinze's mooted departure could pave the way for more tabloid rumours to bear fruit, with the arrival of 17-year-old Southampton left-back Gareth Bale. The Welsh international youngster is highly rated, with United, Liverpool, Arsenal and even Real Madrid tipped to test the Saints' resolve.

Elsewhere, Alan Smith is set to stay at Old Trafford despite being an alleged loan target for half the Premiership, while Wes Brown is also keen to remain at United.

Supersub Wayne Rooney fired Manchester United a 2-1 victory over Portsmouth at Old Trafford - and into the last 16 of the FA Cup. The match looked to be headed for stalemate until Rooney was introduced and after tapping home the opener he produced a classic chip to double the lead. Pompey rallied as Nwankwo Kanu deflected home Pedro Mendes' shot but Rooney's heroics were not to be denied.

Manchester United restored their six-point lead at the top of the Premiership but victory at Tottenham was tinged with controversy as Cristiano Ronaldo won, and scored, a disputed penalty. Ronaldo scored the opener at White Hart Lane on the stroke of half time but it was hard to tell the extent of the contact as Steed Malbranque and Lee Young-Pyo tried to stop his run.

Gone but not forgotten

The Munich air disaster on 6 February 1958 claimed the lives of 23 passengers and crew. Here, ManUtd.com remembers the eight United players and three officials who died, through the words of those who knew them best.

Roger Byrne - aged 28, full-back. 277 appearances, 19 goals, 33 England caps.

"An aristocratic footballer, majestic in his movement. Roger was so fast but at the same time he controlled his movement beautifully, like Nureyev." - Sir Matt Busby

Geoff Bent - aged 25, full-back. 12 appearances.

"When Geoff matured and reached his twenties there were many clubs after him but he stayed loyal. He could look after himself and was a great tackler. Roger Byrne was a consistent player and very brave, that was the reason Geoff got so few games, but he was good enough to hold a regular place in any team." - Jimmy Murphy

Eddie Colman - aged 21, half-back. 107 appearances, 2 goals.

"Eddie was a chirpy lad and a terrific player. He pushed the ball - never kicked it - and he jinked past players. He was known for his swivel hips." - Wilf McGuinness

David Pegg - aged 22, forward, 148 appearances, 28 goals, 1 England cap.

"David would have been a great asset to any team because he was a natural, left-flank player. David was very, very clever. Our best left-winger by a mile." - Sir Matt Busby

Mark Jones - aged 24, half-back, 120 appearances, 1 goal.

"Yorkshireman Mark was a really lovely fellow, but my word he was a tough nut, and nobody took any liberties with him on or off the field." - Bill Foulkes

Duncan Edwards - aged 21, half-back, 175 apps., 21 goals, 18 England caps, 5 goals.

"When I used to hear Muhammad Ali proclaim to the world he was the greatest, I used to smile. The greatest of them all was a footballer named Duncan Edwards." - Jimmy Murphy

"The only player who ever made me feel inferior." - Sir Bobby Charlton

Tommy Taylor - aged 26, forward, 189 apps., 128 goals, 19 England caps, 16 goals

"I rate him as one of the all-time, best centre-forwards in the game, and he had yet to realise all his potential. He was a typically bluff Yorkshireman in many ways, often acting the clown, and a great team man." - Bill Foulkes

Liam 'Billy' Whelan - aged 22, forward, 96 apps., 52 goals, 4 Republic of Ireland caps

"Billy was a magician with a ball at his feet. I really don't think he knew how good he was and how much better he could have become. A world-class forward. There is no doubt about that. His vision and passing was sheer class." - Albert Scanlon

Walter Crickmer, club secretary / Tom Curry, trainer / Bert Whalley, coach

"Walter Crickmer always reminded me of a little dynamo, nothing was too much trouble. Tom Curry, the trainer, was someone we looked up to like a father. And Bert Whalley was certainly a tremendous help to me when I was a part-timer." - Bill Foulkes

L****on: I have to go

Henrik L****on will return to Sweden next week, despite discussing the possibility of extending his stay at United with Sir Alex Ferguson.

The striker's fine form, together with sudden injuries to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Louis Saha, had prompted speculation that he could prolong his time in Manchester.

But after scoring the winner against Lille, L****on told MUTV: "I knew from the beginning, when I signed the contract, that this could be the scenario and I can't complain about that.

"I knew what I got myself into but those are the decisions you have to make in life and you have to stand by those. We had a chat, but he (Sir Alex) respects my opinion and he fully understands why I'm going home.

"I've loved and enjoyed every single moment I've had here playing with United, but at the same time I have a contract with my hometown which I signed a year ago - and I don't think they'll be very interested in letting me go at this point."

Having headed United into the quarter finals of the Champions League, L****on is confident that his temporary team-mates have the wherewithal to go on and win the tournament.

"The opportunity is there," he said. "It's a quality squad. You always have to respect your opponents but at the same time you have to believe in yourself and the quality.

"You have a few players in the current side who have done it before. There's a lot of experience there and they know how to handle it."

Manchester United produced one of their finest ever performances in European competition to overwhelm AS Roma 7-1 to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time since 2002. Meanwhile, Chelsea scored a last minute goal in Valencia to earn a 2-1 win to book their passage to the next round.

'Proud' Ronaldo wins double PFA crown

Cristiano Ronaldo tonight became the first man since 1977 to win both the PFA Player and Young Player of the Year Award in the same season when he was honoured at a gala dinner in London.

Not since Andy Gray scooped each of the coveted accolades 30 years ago has one player dominated the voting of his fellow professionals in such fashion.

Ronaldo, 22, has been in awesome form for United, as the Red Devils remain on course for a Barclays Premiership, FA Cup and Champions League treble.

The achievement is all the more remarkable considering the somewhat harsh criticism the Portuguese winger received following England's demise at the World Cup.

Ronaldo beat Chelsea striker Didier Drogba to the award, with United's former England midfielder Paul Scholes third.

Ryan Giggs and last year's winner, Steven Gerrard, also made the shortlist, alongside 19-year-old Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas.

Ronaldo said it was a 'big honour' to be singled out by his peers.

He said: 'It is a special night. It is amazing and a big honour for me to win trophies like this in the English Premier League. I am very proud.

'My colleagues have voted for me and that is fantastic because the players know the qualities of players.

'I want to keep working hard and getting better because these trophies have now given me more motivation.

'At this moment, I am consistent. I am more mature now and I am playing better.

'This great team has helped me as well, because when the team win it is more easy for us all to play with more confidence.

'Everything is right this season and I am really enjoying it.

'I am still young and I am learning more every day.

'I have much time to learn more and improve myself.

'I try to improve all aspects of my football - not only in training but also in games.'

Fabregas finished runner-up in the young player category as well, with 20-year-old Tottenham winger Aaron Lennon third.

Ronaldo's team-mate Wayne Rooney (21) was also shortlisted, as were Reading striker Kevin Doyle, 23, and 18-year-old defender Micah Richards of Manchester City.

It was Manchester United who took centre stage at the Grosvenor House hotel this evening - with eight of their players making it into the Premier League team of the year and manager Sir Alex Ferguson being honoured with the PFA Special Merit Award.

Ronaldo said: 'This shows what quality we have at Manchester United.

'To have eight players in the team of the year is great.'

Ferguson paid tribute to his multi-talented young winger, who joined United from Sporting Lisbon in a £12.2million deal during August 2003.

The United boss said: 'When we saw him play in a pre-season friendly for Sporting against us, at half-time I knew we had to get him and I said to [then chief executive] Peter Kenyon 'we are not leaving the stadium until we get the boy'.

'At this moment in time, I think he is the best player in the world and his season has been incredible.'

PFA Player and Young Player of the Year 2007 - Cristiano Ronaldo (Manchester United)

PFA Premier League Team of the Year 2007 - Edwin van der Sar, Gary Neville, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand, Patrice Evra (all Man Utd); Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Cristiano Ronaldo (all Man Utd) & Steven Gerrard (Liverpool); Didier Drogba (Chelsea) & Dimitar Berbatov (Tottenham)

Special Merit Award - Sir Alex Ferguson
