basically he is transferring his 4ft OHF to this new tank, so his BB in the OHF is still good hence he can jump start the cycle time, if not definitely will take much longer

i see.....so normally for first timer takes a day or so?....never have such a big tank in my life before...If your tank is completely new, the faster way to cycle the tank is to put in one packet of salt with some vinegar, next day drain them up and put in new water let it cycle another day, put in some cheapo fish like feeder etc, if next day never die, mean your tank is ready for use liao. Advise that not to transfer everything at one time, slowly ;)

bro vinegar?......you mean those edible one?......then how much is enough is enough?Depends the size of your tank. If 6 ft, likely to be 3/4 of it is more than enough liao.

Theo9902

one 4ft OHF is sufficient for 6-footer?

I saw one six-footer in a LFS at Aljunied.... need 2 units of 4ft OHF (stacked box).

some ppl use two 3ft OHF, but then you will have to accept water flowing down the middle of your tank, by the way, he had bought a 6ft OHF

1) rule of thumb place your tank next to a wall so that the load can be easily transferred to the beam and then to the column
2) most ppl exceeds the limit set by the authority
3) avoid placing heavy tanks in the balcony with cantilever slab ie if u do not see column on the outter end of your balcony
4) get to know your neighbour below, visit them once in a while to see if there is any cracks on the ceiling and beam (at the location where u place your tank above) ;)
5) start selling your tank if you saw on the news someone tank went thru the slab :D

Point no 2- As i said, nowaday it is very common to have a 6ft tank. Some ppl even have more than 1, so this definite exceed the limit.

Point no 4- I will start to survey my neighbour below and make friend with them with this intention :D

Point no 5- I think lots of ppl will be looking forward to this, big tank cheap sale ;) :D

you can avoid that by ensuring your tank's total weight is less than 600kg. But then again, how to weight? :D

Aquarian
25-07-2006, 10:09 AM
the bulk of the weight of the tank is the water in your tank, so it can be easily calculated.

For example 4x2x2 filled up to 50mm (2in) from the top of the tank

4ft = 1200mm, 2ft = 600mm, height of water 2ft 10in= 550mm (1ft = 300mm)

Total volume = 396,000,000mm3

1,000,000mm3 = 1 litre

Total volume = 396 litres = 396 kg

(Density of water = 1000kg/m3 = 1kg/litre, 1m3 = 1000 litres)

Yalor, exactly :p. Think better forget about discussing this topic, whos know, wall got ears ;)

so two tier of 4-feet tanks easily needs permit liao :D

the bulk of the weight of the tank is the water in your tank, so it can be easily calculated.

For example 4x2x2 filled up to 50mm (2in) from the top of the tank

4ft = 1200mm, 2ft = 600mm, height of water 2ft 10in= 550mm (1ft = 300mm)

Total volume = 396,000,000mm2

1,000,000mm2 = 1 litre

Total volume = 396 litres = 396 kg

(Density of water = 1000kg/m3 = 1kg/litre, 1m3 = 1000 litres)

ONE 4X1.5X1.5 filled up to 50mm from the top is 216kg, u still need to add others like weight if the tank, stand and media etc

so two tier of 4-feet tanks easily needs permit liao :D

Weight of glass 1/4in - 17.1kg/m2
1/4 in is lightly thicker than 6mm

One 4x1.5x1.5 (6mm thick)

Glass peices
3 pcs 4ft x 1.5ft
2 pcs 1.5ft x 1.5ft

Total area of glass-
3x1.2mx0.45m = 1.62m2
2x0.45mx0.45m = 0.405m2

Total area = 2.025m2
Total weight of tank = 17.1 x 2.025 = 34.6kg

some info on the density of glass can be found here http://hypertextbook.com/facts/2004/ShayeStorm.shtml

say with density of 2800kg/m3, 6mm glass will weigh 0.006x2800=16.8kg/m2

wonder whether the weight of the filter media inside the boxes will damage the center bracing?
