Arsenal relief at Fratton Park postponement
Arsenal were relieved to see their Barclays Premiership match at Portsmouth postponed because of a waterlogged Fratton Park pitch but the south coast club were seething with frustration over referee Mike Riley's decision an hour before the scheduled kick-off.
The Gunners face Italian champions Juventus in the first leg of the Champions League at Highbury on Tuesday night and looked in growing concern at a Portsmouth pitch battered by a day of rain before the scheduled 5.15pm start.
But after three inspections, and a pessimistic weather forecast, Yorkshire official Riley was joined by Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, vice chairman David Dein and Pompey coach Joe Jordan for a final verdict.
Riley said: 'The most important figure is the Portsmouth groundsman who said he didn't think he could clear the surface in time.
'The safety of the players is always paramount and the risk of tackling on that surface is evident. You cannot have players of this calibre getting injured through it.'
Arsenal were back on their team bus and heading for London as Pompey manager Harry Redknapp said: 'I'm disappointed. We were prepared to play because it would have been a good time to play Arsenal and I've played on worst surfaces than that but we have to abide by the referee's decision, even though it is against us.'
Portsmouth chairman Milan Mandaric said: 'We were prepared to play the game. The momentum was with us and our supporters would have been up for it. This has done us no favours.'
Portsmouth were looking for their third win in a row to aid their bid to climb out of the Premiership relegation zone while Arsenal would have climbed to fourth had they taken all three points.

BERLIN : Bayern Munich's German international midfielder Michael Ballack will reportedly sign a four-year contract with English champions Chelsea.
The ZDF television channel made the report citing sources close to the Londoners but there was no official confirmation from Stamford Bridge.
The 29-year-old Ballack, whose contract with the German giants ends in June, revealed on April 13 that he was in talks with Chelsea.
"Nothing has been signed or decided yet but I know what I want," said Ballack.
Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho has already described Ballack as "one of the best players in the world".
Ballack refused a new contract offer with Bayern for whom he has played since 2002.
The former Kaiserslautern and Bayer Leverkusen player has always insisted he wants to play outside Germany.
"It is my last chance to do that," he said recently. - AFP /dt

Skipper Henry predicts 'war' at Highbury
PARIS, April 21 - Arsenal captain Thierry Henry is expecting Saturday's north London derby with Tottenham Hotspur to be an explosive affair.
"It will be war at Highbury," the France striker was quoted as saying in the sports daily L'Equipe on Friday. "An Arsenal v Tottenham match is a London derby, it's traditionally one of the more important games of the season.
"This time, the match will be even more important. Fourth place and qualification for next season's Champions League are at stake. We must win."
Arsenal, in fifth position, are four points adrift of fourth-placed Spurs. The Gunners have four games left to play this season and their local rivals have three.
Spurs could finish fourth and still not be in the Champions League if Arsenal win Europe's elite club competition.
Arsenal will take a 1-0 lead into Tuesday's semi-final second leg at Spanish debutants Villarreal.

Keane prepares for make-or-break derby clash
Republic of Ireland striker Robbie Keane has hailed Saturday's derby clash with rivals Arsenal as the biggest game of his Tottenham career.
The Highbury showdown is already being billed as the match which will ultimately decide who clinches the lucrative fourth place in the Barclays Premiership and Keane is ready for the challenge after a successful year with both club and country.
Keane was made captain of the Republic team earlier this season and signed a new four-year contract at White Hart Lane, but victory over Arsenal and a place among Europe's elite next season would make it even better.
Keane said: 'The Arsenal game is the biggest since I've been at the club, there's a lot riding on it. It's important for me personally and for the players at the club that we can achieve what we want to achieve and that's Champions League.
'The key against Arsenal is not to lose the game, that's the most important thing. If we get something, if we get a point there then great.
'But if we play the way we have been playing I think we have a great chance. We know Arsenal are right behind us, they have a game in hand and Saturday will be a massive game. Of course we are looking over our shoulders, it is only natural that we do.
'Over the last few weeks a lot people have been saying that Tottenham will slip up soon but at the moment we have not.
'As the game gets closer and closer you hear the fans talking about it. It's a massive game for the fans and for ourselves. There's a lot riding on it. For the players it is a great to play in.'
Keane has been in sparkling form for Tottenham since he managed to fight his way back into the first team.
The Irishman was left on the substitutes` bench at the start of the season as coach Martin Jol opted to pair Egyptian striker Mido with England's Jermain Defoe in attack.
He has rewarded Jol's faith with 15 goals so far this season but despite his success, Keane admits that he does not feel safe from the axe.
Keane added: 'I never say I'm first choice at the club. When you start thinking you're first choice then the next week you could be dropped. You can't. I just take each game as it comes and make sure I do well to get picked for the next one.
'I'm playing, so I'm enjoying my football. When you are playing consistently it is much better than stop-start, you get that sharpness. I'm as fit as I've ever been because I'm playing on a regular basis.
'Football is my life. If I am not playing every week, or only now and again it is very difficult. I try not to get myself down. I can be miserable at home no problem because I can get away but when I come into training I can't be.
'This is the most enjoyable and satisfying season I've had. Obviously at the start, I was not playing as much as I'd have liked but when I did get in it has completely changed round for me. I'm delighted.
'Obviously I'm feeling settled because I've been here longer than at other clubs I've been at. I felt settled at other clubs but because of circumstances I had to leave.
'It's been a great year for me, one of my best. To be made captain of your country is a kid`s dream. If I'm being honest I would never have thought that at 25 I would have been the captain. It's been a tremendous year for me and I don't want it to end.'
Even if Spurs manage to clinch fourth place at the end of the season, Arsenal can still rob them of a place in the Champions League if they win Europe's top prize.
But Keane pulls no punches when he says he wants Arsenal to lose in the final if they get there.
Keane added: 'If Arsenal get to the final of course we want them to lose. It's as simple as that. We've got to look after ourselves and we want to get in the Champions League and no disrespect to Arsenal, but we've got to look after Tottenham - that's our priority.
'If we qualify for the UEFA Cup it will be a great achievement in itself. Every year you always want to improve on the last and we've already done that.
'Now, given the position we are in if we don't make the Champions League of course we'd be disappointed.
'The players want to play in the best competition which is the Champions League. We would be gutted if we didn't make it but hopefully on Saturday we can get a good result and come May 7 we will be in the Champions League. It`s going to be tough.'

West Ham 1 - 2 Liverpool
Hayden Mullins and Luis Garcia are almost certain to miss the FA Cup final after both players were sent off for violent conduct nine minutes from time in Liverpool's Premiership victory over West Ham.
Semi-final winner Garcia had only been on the field for two minutes when he tangled with Mullins in a tackle. Mullins pushed the Spaniard to the floor, with both players raising their hands, and referee Howard Webb showed both players a straight red card.
A dismissal for violent conduct carries an automatic three-match suspension which both players who complete when the two sides meet again in Cardiff on May 13.
It is a more serious blow for West Ham than Liverpool. Mullins has been an unsung hero alongside Nigel Reo-Coker at the heart of the Hammers midfield this season.
Liverpool won the game, a dress rehearsal for next month's Cardiff final, with two expertly-taken goals from Djibril Cisse either side of Reo-Coker's equaliser.
• Bosses in plea for bans to be rescinded
The double sending off brought the evening to a sour end. Before kick-off players, fans and former West Ham stars had paid a rousing tribute to John Lyall, the Hammers' manager for 15 years who died suddenly last week aged 66.
Lyall is the only West Ham manager to have won the FA Cup twice and so it was a fitting evening for the club to pay its tributes.
But after the exertions of the weekend and their respective semi-final victories over Chelsea and Middlesbrough, West Ham and Liverpool sent out shadow sides.
Steven Gerrard was rested for Liverpool as Rafael Benitez made eight changes while Alan Pardew made five, reshuffling both his defence and his strikeforce.
Perhaps as a result, West Ham lacked their usual snap and bite and in the opening exchanges Liverpool were able to force the pace.
The Reds won three early corners and Cisse stung the hands of West Ham keeper Jimmy Walker with a viscous strike from 25 yards.
But there was nothing Walker could do after 17 minutes when Cisse, having been picked out by Momo Sissoko, unleashed a low drive from the angle of the West Ham box that flew in at the near post.
West Ham almost snatched an immediate reply through Yossi Benayoun - Jerzy Dudek did well to block the Israeli's close-range volley - but Liverpool were dominant.
Cisse sparked another attack with a well-timed run to escape the offside trap. West Ham were ponderous at the back and Fernando Morientes thought he had put Liverpool 2-0 ahead, only to see his strike from an acute angle ruled out for offside.
Liverpool were looking to exploit Ferdinand down the right flank and Cisse teed up Robbie Fowler, back in the side after being cup-tied for the semi-final, but his audacious attempt to chip Walker from 30 yards drifted just wide.
Elliot Ward had to react quickly as Fowler tried to turn in the box and, when Ferdinand was caught upfield, Cisse broke clear and tried his luck from distance again. This time Walker was up to the test.
West Ham finished the half strongly. Dudek was equal to Bobby Zamora's angled strike.
A slick move allowed Benayoun space to break down the right but Teddy Sheringham headed his near-post cross into the side-netting.
West Ham came forward again after Reo-Coker caught Steve Finnan in possession but Benayoun's diving header from Zamora's cross flew over the bar.
It took just over a minute of the second half for West Ham to find their breakthrough, and it was created in a manner which would have made Lyall proud.
Zamora exchanged passes with Sheringham to create space in the area before squaring the ball for Reo-Coker to apply the simple finish.
West Ham were denied the chance of a second when Zamora strayed offside after Matthew Etherington's had sliced through the heart of Liverpool's midfield.
Reo-Coker then burst into the Liverpool box and it seemed as if the Hammers would snatch the lead. Instead, Liverpool cleared their lines and exacted the perfect sucker-punch.
Fowler sent a superb 30-yard ball over the top of West Ham's defence, Cisse latched onto it and slotted his shot under the advancing Walker.
Dudek was then forced into two superb stops from Etherington, the first from a curling free-kick and the second from an angled drive.
Zamora and Sheringham combined again on another slick West Ham move and Reo-Coker thought he had levelled the scores with a neat chip only for his strike to be ruled out for offside.
Benayoun was replaced with 13 minutes remaining by Marlon Harewood to a rapturous reception from the West Ham fans for the strike that booked West Ham a first FA Cup final appearance in 26 years.
Harewood almost made an immediate impact after Sheringham had picked him out with a wonderful pass.
Liverpool broke downfield and Fowler, unmarked in the West Ham box and eight yards out, directed his header wide.
He was replaced immediately by Garcia, who lasted only two minutes before both he and Mullins were given their marching orders.
• Bosses in plea for bans to be rescinded
West Ham manager Alan Pardew and Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez have pleaded with the Football Association to show 'sympathy' and 'common sense' and allow red-carded pair Hayden Mullins and Luis Garcia to play in the FA Cup final.
'All four of us have been in the referee's room. By the letter of the law perhaps they should have been sent off - but we are all in agreement the FA should show some clemency on this,' said Pardew.
'We are both playing each other in the final and hopefully they will show some sympathy. I hope it can be downgraded. If they want to do three matches, maybe two this year and one next year.
'Ironically, we play each other in the final so it is not affecting anybody else. A tiny little incident has cost them both a very special day.
'The referee said he thought about [the yellow card] but under the guidelines he's given he would be punished if he didn't give two reds.
'Both the players are honest guys. There was no animosity between us. We all went in there and had a civil conversation.
'It was a little moment but as it stands at the moment they will both miss out, which will be a big, big shame and take away from what I think will be a terrific final.
'There is not much we can do. We will appeal and express our feelings in the media and I hope there is some common sense there.'
Liverpool enjoy a strength in depth that West Ham do not and the loss of Mullins will be a major blow to the Hammers.
He has been an unsung hero at the heart of the West Ham midfield this season and is desperately low this evening at the prospect of missing the biggest day of his career.
Pardew added: 'He is a proper guy, a great professional and he is having the best season of his life and for one flash moment to cost him the chance to play in the FA Cup final is galling, not just for him, not just for me but for all players and staff at this club.'
Benitez suggested that the FA follow the Spanish system and instead of laying down a straight three-match ban they judge the situation on its merits.
'It is not easy for the referee but for me the most important thing is that the two players apologised to each other and the referee and it is not that serious an incident,' said Benitez.
'In Spain we have the possibility of banning for two games, three games, four games. Suspending the players for two games [and leaving them available for the final] would be enough because it was not a serious incident.
'We will try to appeal. I am disappointed more than angry. We know how important the final is. It is not as if it is better for us or better for them, in this case it is good for both players and the two teams involved.
'That is the reason both managers had the same idea. I think someone must be sensible. The situation is very clear.'
Liverpool won the game with two goals from Djibril Cisse either side of Nigel Reo-Coker's equaliser. Reo-Coker thought he had earned West Ham a point only to see his strike ruled out for offside - a decision Pardew questioned.
'Our second `goal' is not offside. We have reviewed that on the tape and I am very, very disappointed,' he said.
'I could not look one of players in the eye and say they did not deserve something from the game because they did.'
Benitez made eight changes to the side that beat Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final, including the inclusion of Cisse on the left wing.
Benitez said: 'We showed we have a stronger squad than before and you can approach games like this with different players playing well, scoring goals, creating chances.
'Cisse created two more clear chances and it could have been four goals for him. It was a very good performance.'

Everything in EPL has been decided so early..

3. Portsmouth safe from relegation.

Red faced Fergie getting the Blues
Despite all the tough talk, MU finally failed what Liverpool is capable of doing that is to beat Chelsea the week before, in the end handed the title to Chelsea in such a humiliating scoreline and paid a hefty price as well with Rodney being sent off. It would be interesting to see their next two matches without him Liverpool is still in for a fight.

Ya, many will prefer Arsenal to qualify for CL next season. If they can't get the 4th spot, at least still got another chance, that's to beat Barcelona in the CL final. If that happen, Spurs will have no chance to play CL next season.

No returns, no refunds, no satisfaction guaranteed: the football transfer market can be a harsh place, as even the finest managers have discovered.
And even the biggest cheque cannot ensure a successful signing... as the 10 worst signings of the last 12 months prove.
MikeEgerton/Empics
Xavier was banned from football after just a few games for Boro
• 10. Abel Xavier (Middlesbrough, free)
A one-man boon to the peroxide industry, he illuminated the Riverside, albeit with a beard that, if it glowed any more, would be radioactive.
Sadly, his performances were less memorable. Indeed Xavier only managed four matches - one a home defeat to Sunderland - before failing a drug test. His protestations of innocence have fallen on deaf ears; perhaps those four games were enough to convince Steve McClaren he was better off with Stuart Parnaby.
• 9. Zvonimir Vukic (Portsmouth, undisclosed)
It could have been almost any of the arrivals under Alain Perrin; indeed, even in his moment of triumph after preserving Portsmouth's Premiership status, Harry Redknapp was open in his contempt for his predecessor's signings. There were 15 players, he said, who were not good enough to play for Portsmouth. Without a doubt, Zvonimir Vukic was one such.
Undistinguished as he appeared, the Serbia and Montenegro midfielder was hardly helped by Perrin's baffling 3-3-3-1 formation. He has vanished under Redknapp, eventually leaving for Partizan Belgrade on a free at the end of the January transfer window, and this is one undisclosed signing that Portsmouth won't be rushing to disclose.
• 8. Per Kroldrup (Everton, £5million)
As compliments go, 'looked good in pre-season' ranks up there with 'good in training'; the unspoken implication is that they are less useful in competitive matches. Dane Per Kroldrup did indeed impress in pre-season, but injuries and a swift decision by David Moyes that he was insufficiently aggressive for the Premiership meant he was limited to a solitary league start. And even that was a 4-0 defeat to Aston Villa.
After six months, Moyes cut his losses and sold Kroldrup for £3million, preferring to bring back his predecessor, 34-year-old Alan Stubbs, on a free transfer.
• 7. Diomansy Kamara (West Brom, £1.5million)
While Nathan Ellington and, before his departure, Robert Earnshaw were regular sights on the bench at West Brom, Diomansy Kamara was alone among Bryan Robson's five forwards in invariably starting. Whether as a striker or a left winger, his pace posed problems.
The difficulty for West Brom was the Senegalese's capacity to fail to score from practically anywhere. Misses against Aston Villa and Birmingham must rank among the costliest of the season, and he still has a solitary Premiership goal for Albion.
• 6. Walter Pandiani (Birmingham, £3million)
Like a poor man's Christophe Dugarry, he excelled on loan and then failed miserably when the deal was made permanent. Birmingham, however, were £2million poorer after a six-month stint that only yielded two goals.
The brothers Gold and David Sullivan can surely afford it, but it set the tone for a season where Birmingham's strikers belied big reputations, price tags and salaries by consistently not scoring.
• 5. Wilfred Bouma (Aston Villa, £3.5million)
He arrived as a flagship signing, as part of David O'Leary's long-term plan to upgrade the Aston Villa squad. He ended the season, along with all his team-mates, available for transfer. And in between, little went right for Wilfred Bouma. There was a particularly inauspicious debut - a 4-0 defeat to West Ham - a miserable record (five wins in 20 games) and a demotion to the bench, even when Olof Mellberg, Martin Laursen and Mark Delaney were all injured.
If further proof of Guus Hiddink's managerial qualities were required, he contrived to take a team including Bouma to the Champions League semi-finals. O'Leary is unlikely to emulate him.
• 4. Jon Stead (Sunderland, £1.8million)
Much of Mick McCarthy's transfer policy can be faulted. A seeming insistence on signing a striker from the Championship resulted in the arrival of Andy Gray (one goal in 22 games). Jon Stead was a rare recruit from the Premiership and has proved still less prolific.
He broke his Sunderland duck in his 30th game; his recent record stands at three goals in 67 matches. Reasons abound for Sunderland's relegation, but buying a two-goal strike partnership ranks high among them.
• 3. Shaun Wright-Phillips (Chelsea, £21million)
At Manchester City, he was perhaps the Premiership's best right winger, prolific in an average team and a beguiling combination of fearsome pace and a ferocious shot. At Chelsea, seemingly weighed down by an enormous price tag and confused by Jose Mourinho's definition of a winger, he has failed to score in 37 games.
Indeed, he did not rate a place among the substitutes for the FA Cup semi-final, nor rate a mention when Mourinho berated his out-of-form wingers. Yet when he joined Chelsea, John Terry said Wright-Phillips had as much ability as Wayne Rooney; now, their World Cup places are in jeopardy for very different reasons. Another, rather cheaper, move is surely required.
MikeHewitt/GettyImages
Del Horno's dismissal against Barcelona was the nadir in a season that has delivered little.
• 2. Asier del Horno (Chelsea, £8million)
Jose Mourinho feels that rightful credit is denied him because of Chelsea's wealth. Soccernet, however, is keen to remedy that; two of the Premiership's three worst signings, at a combined cost of £32million, are Mourinho's buys.
Asier del Horno, the league's most expensive left back, has only served to illustrate how William Gallas excels out of position on his flank.
Del Horno's despairing lunge at Lionel Messi was a prime cause of Chelsea's Champions League exit and, substituted in the first half against Portsmouth and at the interval against Liverpool, he has become accustomed to not completing games. It is hard to envisage him seeing out his contract at Stamford Bridge, either.
• 1. Albert Luque (Newcastle, £9.5 million)
The Spanish economy has benefited to the tune of £15million from Newcastle's generosity in recent years. First there was Marcelino, the defender sidelined by the most insignificant of injuries. And now there is Albert Luque, signed as the supply line to Alan Shearer and Michael Owen and instead thoroughly upstaged by the teenager Charles N'Zogbia.
Newcastle supporters could have been forgiven for wondering whether they had lost their grasp on sanity when Real Madrid expressed an interest in Luque, despite his fine record with Deportivo la Coruna. Because, often omitted from the matchday 16, he has only managed six Premiership starts and one, rather meaningless, goal against Sunderland. When Graeme Souness blunders in the transfer market - as Jean-Alain Boumsong shows - he does so catastrophically; had they succeeded, the Scot might still have a job.
Newcastle's next manager may care to note that, at the moment, excelling in La Liga appears a guarantee of infamy on Tyneside.

from wad i gather, i think bro pois comments in principal is saying no one is rite and no one is wrong about the epl issue. Y? becos :
1- It is ok to talk about epl teams under epl thread. But a bro brought up UEFA Cup, so bros can just talk abt epl team , ie boro's chances, performance, or team updates leading into the final. This means can talk any thing abt boro hving played 4 games in 8 days and will boro stand a chance, etc, etc.
2- However, the topic stating UEFA Cup into epl thread is abit misleading so a bro is merely trying to highlight out of concern tat UEFA CUp and epl r sperate topics. And of cos every bro understands boro is a epl team. So the objective was to highlight to seperate the issues if talk is going to be about sevilla and boro, etc , etc.
HOpe above is easy to clarify wad i think.:D :)

Ok, be it off topic non off topic, there is a thread. Let me continue here about EPL :Arsenal top earners with £52m.
Updated: May 10, 2006
Arsenal top earners with £52m
Arsenal's run to the Champions League final saw them eclipse Chelsea in earnings last season.
The Gunners earned £52.7million in prize money and TV cash from all competitions, well above their rivals Chelsea (£47.5m), Liverpool (£43.2m) and Manchester United (£39.9m).
Almost half Arsenal's income came from the Champions League - victory over Barcelona in the final would bring in a further £2million - and explains Tottenham's desperate efforts this week to qualify for Europe's elite club competition.
Spurs, the highest-placed club not involved in the Champions League, earned £26.2million, less than half the sum their north London rivals pulled in.
Henk Potts, a football finance analyst with Barclays stockbrokers, said: 'The Champions League is the cash cow of modern football and it is so important to the leading clubs to be part of it.
'It is not just the TV and prize money, though that is very lucrative in itself, but it is vital in terms of a club's profile, merchandising and desirability for sponsors.
'That's why it was so important for Arsenal to be in the Champions League next season, having spent so much money on a new stadium - and why Tottenham have been going to such lengths to try to get there themselves.'
Manchester United's second successive disappointing season in the Champions League saw their earnings drop to under £40million - compared to £54million two years ago. They will still outperform their rivals in terms of income from gate receipts, other match-day income and merchandise but the figures will give the Glazer family some food for thought.
Liverpool's run to the FA Cup, and qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase, enabled them to earn more than United, while Middlesbrough's success in cup competitions brought in an extra £5million.
Potts says the new Premier League TV deal for 2007-10 will see around a 65% increase in Premiership TV money for every club - but that the Champions League should retain its importance to the top clubs.
He added: 'Every Premier League club will get more TV money but the value of the Champions League is likely to go up as well.
'It is quite hard to understand what the European Commission were doing in relation to the Premier League TV deal. They have not helped the broadcasters, have not helped the consumers and will just have helped the clubs become even richer.'
This explain why, every team fighting for the CL and it make a big difference on their bank's book if one team could not proceeds to the second round compare to finalist.

Personally I feel "out of topic" type of small talks are happening everywhere in all forums. The issue here is how flexible we are in "tolerating" the out of topic talks.
Frankly speaking, everyone including myself has the habbit of side tracking to other topics and that happen in all forums. Occassionally, I was reminded by some seniors and I take it as a friendly reminder.
As long as is not too far, we should be able to accept it. But then again, it is difficult to determine which are "too far". Hey, is just a forum here....... a very informal and friendly environment. Furthermore, the EPL thread is just another sport thread, our main focus is on fish hobby. So why make it so strict right? :D
Even in serious enviroment like Cabinet meeting or MP Session, I am sure there are smalls talks which is out of topic of discussion.
May I suggest, if anyone thinks that someone has side-tracked too far, just pm him or send him a friendly reminder with a smilling face. It will definitely avoid some unneccessary arguments. At the end of the day, we are here to enjoy right? :D

Actually, bro Aquarian stated, he doesn't want to open another new thread just solely talking about certain matches, in fact both matches also can combined into one thread, this is my personal point of view. Maybe i suggest instead of putting EPL as a title, maybe you guys can come out with a idea to combine this two cup into one thread, so one thread do all the talking lor! FA Cup Final 2005-06
Ch 24 9.55pm Liverpool vs West Ham
Disclaimer: In order not to be accused of being out of topic or misleading ppl again, here is a brief description of FA Cup so you know it is different from EPL !!!
Extract from Wikipedia
FA CUP
The Football Association Challenge Cup, commonly known as the FA Cup, is the main "knockout" cup competition in English football, run by and named after The Football Association.
The FA Cup is the oldest football competition in the world, commencing in 1872 (the Scottish Cup beginning a year later in 1873). As such, its reputation as the sport's premier domestic cup competition extends around the world. Because it involves clubs of all standards playing against each other, there is great scope for "giant-killers" from the lower divisions to eliminate top clubs from the tournament. A record 674 teams have entered the FA Cup in 2005-2006. In comparison, the League Cup, a lower prestige English football knockout tournament, can involve only the 92 respective members of the Football League (which organises the competition) and the FA Premier League.
The name "FA Cup" usually refers to the English men's tournament. The equivalent competition for women's teams is the FA Women's Cup. The women's cup has a much lower public profile than the men's, in common with all women's football in England. Many nations also have similar competitions, inspired by this legendary tournament.
Arsenal are the current holders of the trophy, although they were eliminated from the 2005-2006 Cup by Bolton Wanderers. The 2006 final will be between Liverpool and West Ham United.

The FA Cup - this is the fourth trophy, in use since 1992, and identical in design to the third trophy introduced in 1911. The trophy shares its name with the competition.
__________________________________________________ _______________
FORMAT
The competition is a knockout tournament with pairings drawn completely at random - there are no seeds. The draw also determines which team will play at home. If a match is drawn, there is usually a replay at the ground of the other team although it is possible for teams to agree in advance not to replay a tie in which case the initial match will be settled by means of extra time and penalty shootouts if necessary. Drawn replays are now settled with extra time and penalty shootouts, though in the past further replays were possible, and some ties took as many as six matches to settle.
Traditionally, the FA Cup Final is played at London's Wembley Stadium. However, due to extensive redevelopment of Wembley, finals have been played at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff since 2001. Although early venues include Kennington Oval, the Crystal Palace Park and Stamford Bridge, this was the first time the final had been played outside of England (it should be noted that not only English League teams participate in the competition, so Welsh teams in English leagues such as Cardiff City F.C. do participate in the cup, and Cardiff City F.C. did win the Cup in 1927). The FA had hoped that the 2006 final would take place at the rebuilt Wembley Stadium, but the FA Cup final on May 13, 2006 will be played at the Millennium Stadium, because the builders have failed to guarantee that it will be completed on time.
The semi-finals are contested at neutral venues; in the past these have usually been the home grounds of teams not involved in that semi-final, such as Old Trafford in Manchester, Villa Park in Birmingham and Hillsborough in Sheffield. However, in 2005 both semi-finals were held at the Millennium Stadium. In future years it is expected that all semi-finals will be played at the new Wembley Stadium. However, in 2006 the FA have decided to revert to the neutral ground system - Chelsea played their tie with Liverpool at Old Trafford whilst West Ham played their tie with Middlesbrough at Villa Park on 22 and 23 April respectively.
The competition begins in August with the Extra-Preliminary Round contested by clubs occupying a low position in the English football league system, which any FA affiliated club meeting a basic standard of ability and ground facilities may enter. 644 clubs entered the competition in the 2003/04 season, a (then) record 660 for 2004/05 (the old record was 656 in 1921/22), and new record of 674 for 2005/06. Following the Extra-Preliminary Round is a Preliminary Round, four Qualifying Rounds, and six Rounds of the competition proper, followed by the Semi-Finals and the Final. All of FA Premier League and Football League clubs may enter. Non-league clubs may also enter if they competed in the previous season's FA Trophy or FA Vase and are deemed to be playing in an "acceptable" league for the current season. All clubs entering the competition must have a suitable and safe stadium capacity.
Clubs higher up the English football league system are given byes to certain rounds. For example, clubs playing in the Conference North or Conference South are given exemption to Second Qualifying Round, while those from the Conference National are given exemption to the Fourth Qualifying Round. Clubs from Football League One and Football League Two are given exemption into the First Round proper in November, and Football League Championship and Premier League teams are given exemption into the Third Round, traditionally held in the first weekend in January. The Final is played at the end of the season in May.
Since the foundation of The Football League, Tottenham Hotspur in 1901 have been the only non-league winners of the FA Cup. They were then playing in the Southern League and were only elected to the Football League in 1908. At that time the Football League consisted of only two 18-team divisions; Spurs's victory then would be comparable to a team near the bottom of the third level of the English football pyramid (currently League One) winning today.
The winning team qualifies by right for the first round of the UEFA Cup. If the winners also qualify for the Champions League by merit of league position, the losing finalist qualifies for the UEFA Cup in their place. If both finalists qualify for the Champions League, an extra UEFA Cup place is given on the basis of Premier League position.
Trophies
At the end of the final, the winning team is presented with a trophy, also known as the "FA Cup", which they hold until the following year's final. Traditionally, at Wembley finals, the presentation was made at the Royal Box, with players, led by the captain, mounting a staircase to a gangway in front of the box and returning by a second staircase on the other side of the box. At Cardiff the presentation has been made on a podium on the pitch. The cup is decorated with ribbons in the colours of the winning team; a common riddle asks, "What is always taken to the Cup Final, but never used?" (The answer is, "the losing team's ribbons"). Individual members of the teams playing in the final are presented with winners' and runners'-up medals.
The present FA Cup trophy is the fourth. The first, the 'little tin idol', was used from the inception of the Cup in 1871-2 until it was stolen from a Birmingham shop window belonging to William Shillcock while held by Aston Villa on September 11, 1895. It was never seen again and is presumed to have been melted down. The second trophy was a replica of the first, and was last used in 1910 before being presented to the FA's long-serving president Lord Kinnaird. It was sold at Christie's on May 19 2005 for £420,000 (£478,400 including auction fees and taxes) to David Gold, the chairman of Birmingham City. A new, larger, trophy was bought by the FA in 1911 designed and manufactured by Fattorini's of Bradford and won by Bradford City in its first outing, the only time a team from Bradford has reached the final. This trophy still exists but is now too fragile to be used, so an exact replica was made and has been in use since the 1992 final. Therefore, though the FA Cup is the oldest domestic football competition in the world, its trophy is not the oldest; that title is claimed by the Scottish Cup.

Strong become stronger and weak become weaker. Ballack on board and Shevchenko is on his way.
http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=367885&cc=4716
LONDON, May 14 (Reuters) - Chelsea are set to complete the free transfer of Bayern Munich and Germany midfielder Michael Ballack this weekend and will hold a news conference with the player on Monday.
The Premiership champions announced the Stamford Bridge news conference on Sunday but gave no details of any contract.
Ballack, a superb all-round midfielder, played his final match with German champions Bayern on Saturday and was jeered by the team's fans.
In his four years at the club he won three Bundesliga titles and three German cups. Ballack joined Bayern having helped Bayer Leverkusen to the 2002 final of the Champions League.
He was first linked with a move to Chelsea in February but denied British newspaper reports that he had signed a four-year deal with the club worth £25million.
However, as the season progressed it became increasingly obvious that he would join up with coach Jose Mourinho at the club funded by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.
Frustrated by jeering and whistling from the Bayern fans, the 29-year-old said last Friday: 'I think my decision should be accepted and I shouldn't be kicked around any more about it.
After another poor reception at the start of Saturday's 3-3 home draw with Borussia Dortmund, he said: 'The fans are sensitive to what is said. But I always tried hard to do my job and that should be honoured.
'I want a new challenge now. I've got to accept some jeering. It shows I was an important player but it does hurt.
'I was not able to make a decision sooner and couldn't force a decision just because Bayern managers demanded one. There are a lot of others at Bayern who don't know whether they have a future at Bayern Munich or not.
'I've had a great time here and felt good with a great team that won a lot of titles,' he said.
Chelsea's other main transfer target is reported to be AC Milan and Ukraine striker Andriy Shevchenko.
The team will hold an open-topped bus Premiership victory parade in west London later on Sunday.

I remember I was seeing Sheff Utd, but when I typed, I took the third place, which is Watford. Sorry for the confusion.
BTW brother, do you have to be so angry?
Jia jia liang cha for you :D
Wrong quote. It's Sheffield United and Reading who are already in EPL next season, we are still waiting for Leeds vs Watford tie to see which one can enter EPL.

Great news, Henry is staying !!!
Henry 'to sign new Arsenal deal'

Arsenal's record goalscorer has one year left on his contract
Thierry Henry is set to end months of speculation over his future by signing a new contract at Arsenal, inspired by their Champions League final display.
Henry, whose contract runs out next year, had been linked with a move to Champions League winners Barcelona.
"I hope to stay as long as I can keep running. I couldn't leave the fans. They're like family," he told The Sun.
"I love Barcelona, but on Wednesday Arsenal showed they had heart. I hope to finalise details today."

true but not many teams can afford to have so many star players too, and being who they are, they are constantly in good demand, so you may not hang on too them for too long. Like smaller team- Everton that could not hang on to Rudeney. ;)

Watford completed a remarkable season by clinching a place in the Premiership by crushing Leeds 3-0 in the Championship play-off final - a match worth an estimated £40m to the winner. Goals from Jay DeMerit, James Chambers and a late penalty from Darius Henderson ensured Adrian Boothroyd's team prevailed.

There would be this free game : Yahoo Fantasy game. I have playing it for the past 3 years.
You will allocated 100 Mil as initial capital to build your team. After building up your team, "score" will be allocated with their actual performance in EPL.
Eg, Goal - 3 pts, Assist - 2 pts, Shot on Target - 1 pts, successful cross - 1 pts. May be we can compete among ourself by using that game.
Currently the game have not start yet, should be ard beginning of Aug. If you guys interested, I will notice you guys.
