I only know one thing - Bad water condition will result in Chipped Scales, loss of Appettie and jumpy aro.

The condition of the Shine will be very much on the genes and the Food Aro consume and the enovirment it is in,
Dun expect a very strong colouration aro in a white tank envoirment..... I personally dun believe in white tank effect.

There are many good water conditioner around in the LSF. Seachem, stresscoat, nutrafin, etc, with added vitamin etc. What I know what I was keeping flowerhorn and from talking to brothers keeping arowana. to have a good shine attributes the following factors:
1. Genetics of the fish
2. the food that the aro eats(balanced diet): super bloodworms, prawns, pellets, etc
3. the background of the tank, in my opinion: black or deep blue
4. Blackwater extract..
5. must tan the aro using special lights
