I kick off first...........
1.)Some discus of the same brood do not grow uniformly or stunted, though they are in healthy condition.
There are several possible reasons :
- Though there are no proper scientific studies about it. Ever heard about "Frog Syndrome" ? The urine from other frogs can suppress the growth of the weaker one. This also happen to discus. So in a school of discuss there are always some that seemed stunted. If these few discus were transfered to a tank of smaller discus, they start to accelerate in growth. It is not surprising that they may eventually catch up in size with their siblings in the previous tank in may be a year´s time. But after those few were removed from the original tank, a few new ones will take over their place as stunted discus. Of course there is also another social habit factor of discus. Stunted discus that are transfered to other tank of smaller discus, they became the aggressors and dare to move around and are the first few to eat. That triggers growth. So avoid overcrowding of discus in a tank. Keep less discus in tank or change water more frequently to get a bigger size one. Less is more.
- Perhaps it caused by genetic trait. As most strains in the market are hybrids, gene may play a part in the different growth rate even within the same spawn.
- Discus always suffered from intestinal infection since from the young age that caused the intestine cannot work properly anymore to absorb the nutrients.
2.).........?????.......any other phenomenons ? Let´s share together. Thx

Hi Suri!
thanks for sharing. Interesting topic to discuss.......
I am always fascinated by this theory too. These are my observations and findings... :
Inconsistent growth rates on juvs from 10mm to 50mm are caused by :
1) insufficient food given to the fries
2) unequal distribution of food. Meaning, the bh cubes are too big. For those hobbyist that feeds their babies on BBS, i notice also that some babies are "crossed-eyed" and cannot accurately eat the BBS. Usually its after 4-5 trys that the babies successfully eat the bbs. Solution to that is very simple .... feed more :D
3) According to Penang Discus book by Shaifullah Yeng, he mentioned that babies are susceptible to Oodinum parasites. This is caused by feeding of live BBS. This IMO is the main problem of most ppl that have when their babies start dying at the age of 4 weeks old.
4) Improper preparation of the parents prior to breeding. Meaning, parent fishes should be de-worm and de-parasite before breeding them to avoid cross infection to the babies.
5) For those ppl who feeds their babies with BH or PH, be sure to defrost them totally. Juvs are unable to eat hard food and they will give up pecking on the hard food after a while. Some are more persistent and eat till they belly is bloated.
Above are just some of the points that i have managed to reduce inconsistent growth rates of a batch.

My point of view :
Characteristic - Every fish has it's own characteristic - shy, timid or aggresive. Those more aggresive tend to grow better compare to those who are shy and timid. Just like human. So when choosing fishes, avoid those shy, hiding fish. However, even you choose all 10 pcs the most aggresive fishes and keep in a tank, there sure have the most aggresive out of the aggresive. There are some technique like distribution food evenly and do not provide hiding place (Discus is teritorial fish, they will fight for "home" or hide in the "home") can minimize the fighting.

Good constructive suggestions.
Bro suri13, how about gathering all factors, research and provide us a technical article about this .:D

2.) Not sure whether this topics can be cl***ified as phenomenon or not, but just for info ok lah.......:) .......To sell "rubbish" with gold price.
Sometimes we can see this kind of discus in the shop around sg, which they name it "bat discus" or super high fin or even ultra high fin....:) with ultra expensive price and even not to be sold. The shop owner told me that bat discus is a very rare genetic mutant....like x-men....here x-discus...:) ..therefore damned expensive. As newbie, I´m a bit amazed of it. Months after that I coincidentally read a discus book by Andrew Soh which stated bat discus is actually non genetic. This form exists because the discus got bacteria infection in the young age (fry) or treated wrongly with anti-biotics and can happen to any strains of discus. To some breeders, it seems to "breed true" because the pathogen is still having a strong foothold in the farm setup. So this bat discus is actually a handicapped discus, that people try to define it as exotic type. What a misleading for discus hobbyist especially a newbie like me.......:)
