Sat down yesterday and looked at my fishes and spend sometimes thinking over why i kept discus.
Being in the hobby for the past few months allowed me to meet people frm different walks of life and also people who come into this hobby for different reasons. I have started a poll and maybe you can drop your vote and tell us more why you are into the king of tropical fish.

For me i am mesmerised by the parenting instinct of the fish initially. And also i got to know a group of friends who are keeping discus at the point of time. So like the saying goes, 'if you can't beat them join them'.:stick_out_tongue:
Been to a discus competition and saw many different types of discus, knowing that it is not easy to groom a discus from young till of age to enter comp, i decide that i want to keep my own discus and bring them for competition in future. I might be be able to pit myself against those reowned breeders and hobbist with vast experiences, but as long as i can bring up a fish and groom it for competition, i will be more than happy.
Well i have shared my discus story, wat abt yours?

I had the idea as Heckel - Parenting instinct of discus looking after their young one. It is so lovely to watch these little juv. following the parent. The other thing is there is so many different color and type or different species.

I fell for discus after going to a farm, and saw their pair took care of the fries. And i told myself i want that scene in my tanks too. And from then on there's no turning back.

heckel - yup...someone must pay for the hobby. Water ....electricity....food etc. Best part of doing some selling is to get back some money and buy new fishes...
Also imagine if you buy and buy with no income coming in...imagine what the OC will say??

Hey you make me realise that. Nowadays when i am out with my friends i will make it a point to go home earlier so i can change water for my fishes. I also spend more time at home instead of being outside doing something else.

I´m attracted by their unique aesthethics that make them different from other fishes. Have kept different fishes from guppy to arowana, but never try this "king of fishes" before as the most difficult to keep fish as claimed by many people. So I personally feel curious & challenged from it.

how to lose money??
Nowadays a avg lss pair sells for $300 for example. If that pair produces 100 offspring, and if you sell the juvs for avg of $5 after 3 months, that is $500 a batch.

U have not input the water bill, Electric bill, Food & labour (Hard work + effort).

My aim is to create a new discus by using albinos.
Edward, actually is tough making money out of the discus hobby these days as lesser and lesser people are playing discus. Those money earned from selling juvs will be like more like a source of compensating your electric and water bills.

can you pls tell us how much is your water, electric bill, food per tank of discus?
For labour, say WC, say 30 fish tanks, WC is about 2 hours. That makes about 120mins/30 tanks which is about 4mins per tank. So how much is the labour per fish? Quite negligible right?
:hmmm:

if everybody calculate like you then there will be discus farms all over sg already. Keeping discus just for the sake of making money will not make one last long in this hobby.
Like what bro spid said nowadays lesser and lesser people are keeping discus which makes sellingof the offsprings difficult. Unless of course you look for fish shop or some fish farms to buy over the batch. After deducting all your cost, i dun think you can really make money. Unless of course you are mass producing.

Yup bro bai i agree with you. As long as i can get back money for the water and electric bills i am more than happy already. As for hark work and time, i feel that i enjoying doing the hardwork and spending thetime with my fishes.

BS eggs are expensive nowadays. If you wan to raise the fries till the size you can sell them, the cost is not cheap. 3 months of water may not cost much but after adding in the electric bills, it will still take up a percentage of the $500.
Unless of course if you get a fish farm to buy by the batch from you. If you sell to hobbist i am sure among the 100 fries only 50% will be selected. The rest will be deemed 'not as nice' by buyers. This is also another problem.
My conclusion is that enjoy the hobby and not think too much abt the money involved.

edward,
i used to buy/sell discus, hoping to make some extra $$. it started off well, but after i hv met with some problem, hv to stop.
of course i find making extra $$ very useful but i also find strange ppl coming to my house at all hours a bit inconvenient.
i'll sell again if i can get a very nice crossing, but maybe to friends or friend's friend only.

Hi richard,
You got it there and then. Sensitive issues when you have people whom you dun really know coming to your place all the time. Sometimes might invite some unwanted problems.

If selling discus really good business, how come so many discus shop closed and home breeder stop trading? Well look into this factors :
1) Place.
Including space constraint and convenience. In order to make money, you must have tanks. You also must have a place convenience for doing business, which i think "home" is not appropriate. High Barrier
2) "worker"
Mostly husband and wife are working, so who is going to run the "work" for discus during day time? Maid? Yes, still can overcome this shortage by "working" after day time job. Low barrier
3) Demand
Needless to say much about this. Networking is important. Middle barrier
4) AVA
Needless to say much. Extreme High barrier.

Good points by bro oscar. Most hobbist are hindered by most if not all of the above listed barriers. Not many people have the luxury of space and time.

a few years ago, when discus was gaining popularity, many bros bred and sells discus as a business and not as a hobby. once the demand for discus drop. they too drop out of the discus scene.
but wif a hobbyist things are different, it doesn't matter wat the demand is, they will still keep their beloved discus.

Fully agree with you bro. Those who are keeping to make money will quit once the market is down whereas true hobbist are always around the hobby irregardless of how bad the market is. In fact it is good for us that we can purchase nice discus at more affordable prices.
