Hi peeps,
I am sure those of us who are breeding our fishes will come to a stage when we face this problem. That is to cull or not to cull. Different people have different say on culling. Some only cull away those deformed fishes, while others will cull away slower growers even.
I am the type who do not cull my fishes unless the fry has got serious problems. Many a times when i run out of space i got the desire to cull and clear some space. But i just do not have the heart to do so.
Someone ever told me that culling away the slower growers and weaker fries will make my lineage better. What's your say on this? Comments please folks:wink:

Usually for the slow grower, i would put them in another tank and give them to some newbie.

For the deformed juvs, i will cull them.

i cull a lot. slow growers, those that dun look well,
weaker fries. dun like to overcrowd them.
i think it's better to cull as i dun hv
that much space to spare.

i would agree that space constraint really make me cull those fries. But more important is that we get rid of the weaker genes when we cull.

I agreed that most of us have space problem. So I culled most of the time but after sometime I feel heart pain so I give away those - slow growing, defects, and not up to certain standard fishes. However, I did give away but there are some unfriendly commends which disappointed me. So I stop giving away directly but to get my brother in law to give away to his friends and church members. To someone I don't know and those who are new in discus keeping. Hope this will help to encourage more discus keeping hobby.

hi cpj,
yes that is some of the problems when giving away free fish,
ppl are not considerate and sometimes pass bad comments.
but i think the worst scenario is when someone collect free fish and later sells them away. there are those who specailised in doing such thing.
every time someone wants to gv away free fish they are always the first
to ask. so for me it's cull rather than give away FOC.

Richard,

Wow like that also can heh? Get free from someone and later sell it. Wow this is bad. I have to be very careful than. Anyway, according to my brother in law that most of them are new in discus keeping. So I am not too worry at least it go to new comer even they fail in keeping it, when I cull again they try again. I received a few called that my brother in law given to them for help and advice. So these few successfully raise them. I am glad at least at the safe hand.

Thanks for your feedback so that I can be careful of when come to FOC fishes. :embarrassed: :embarrassed: :embarrassed:

Previously i gave away some of my culls, i also encounter some remarks by the person receiving the fishes. There was even one person who actually came over to my place and wanted to choose from my tanks. Kind of sick of all these people. So nowadays i will give my fishes away to students who are keen in the hobby but have limited resources to purchase fishes.
But sometimes when i think back giving away culls seems like not the right thing to do. As normally culls are weaker and will not be able to survive under a newbie's hands. Either that or the culls keep falling sick. So nowadays i will throw away the culls and only give away those slower growers.

I'll give those "Still Can Make It 1" to my relative or frenz or my dad frenz.
Those "Canot Make It 1" I'll give to another special frenz. Her name is "Lake". :stick_out_tongue:

I give to "Toilet Bowl". No point giving away cull fish, it doesn't help in this hobby or worst, invite un-welcome remarks.

I cull those weak, deformed fishes. As well as those not nice looking, longish or stunted. Giving away those fishes certainly not promoting/encouraging some one to appreciate discus.

Fully agreed. But i feel that those slightly smaller sized ones still ok for newbies to try out.

i dont practise culling and dont give anything free, generally ppl tend to think that if something is given out free , then the importance is really lost
