In the market, there are serveral types of filteration system available. And many of us do have our fancy of particular kind of the filteration system e.g overhead filteration system, cannister system, Internal overhead system etc..... therefore, i would like to have a survey and find out what is actually your fancy and your reliable types of filteration system and share it with everybody.
As for myself, i will always go for stackable overhead filteration system, because i felt that this system is the best for me in term of maintenance and monitor.
So what about you??? :)

i never use sump but i think it should be better, first of all you increase the volume of water in circulation and it is not so unsightly as compared to OHF

my favourite is still the sponge filter....cheap and maintenance free. I have used it in a 4ft standard tank, 13-15 adult discus, 2 sponge filter...my ammonia reading is zero. Zero maintenance for sponge...

yes, i suppose u can only afford to do this with adult fish, with young fishes that constantly releasing hormones into the water, not changing water regulary will inhibits the growth and possibly stunt the growth, is that right??? Wow, that was some collection you have there

This is only theoretical and proven in goldfish. But no one has ever make any study in discus ....not that i have heard of.
Another well know fact is that high nitrate level will also stunt fishes. I also don't agree with this as my nitrate level in the tank is way way up there and beyond measuring with my chemical test kit.
Pls note that fishes in my tanks are mixture of adults and young juvs. Some where raised this way from 10cents size.
I was taught by industry experts to change water 2 times a day and feeding at least 7 times a day and full tank scrub at the end of the day. In the end...the fishes turn up to be stunted easily.
But which ever way that you find works for you....keep on doing that.

thank you for your insight into keeping discus, I also believe it is best to keep it natural. I believe one of the reason why they need to change water so often is due to heavy routine of feeding?? Correct me if I am wrong cos I only have a couple months of keeping discus and I started the easy way, not from young fish ;)

I just installed another filteration system to my current tank. Basically this filteration is operated by a cannister, and it will go throught the UV sterilizer before a clean water go back to the tank again :)

Sump basically the advantage is can hide inside the cabinet, as for ohf, it will look quite untidy as because it was exposing. But whatever it is, as long as the filteration system works, i believe it is not a very big issue here :)

Which Filtration are you using for your Aro Set Up?
1. Sump Tank
2. Stackable Overhead Filtration
3. Cannister
4. IOS
5. Internal Filter
If possible, please kindly give more information on type of pump used, number of trays used, number of partition in Sump/ IOS, what kind of Media Used. Please kindly also indicate Tank Size.

Let me start...
I will be using a lifetech 10000 pump for my 5ft sump tank. I will be using 5kg of Bacteria House and 50 kilos of ceramics rims...
This is how my filtration will work....
Water flow in EOS (overflow and underflow)
Water will be splash into a mini Baki Shower of 5kg of Bacteria House (Wet Dry Filtration)
http://www.fish-hub.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=2605&stc=1&d=1158973040
Water will be transfered to a wool chamber (dirt will be trapped on the white wool and 2 thick layers of genuine Japanese Matt)
http://www.fish-hub.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=2606&stc=1&d=1158973040
Then water will be pumping through 2 chamber of 50kg Ceramics Rings before the water was returned to the tank (Bio Filtration)
http://www.fish-hub.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=2607&stc=1&d=1158973070.

Personally have 2 tanks for aros.
Setup 1 i am using a stackable OHF. Setup 2 i am using a canister. Still prefer the OHF setup as it is easy to maintain.
But if i were to start a comm or have more tankmates i would opt for a sump which will be the ultimate setup.

I feel that sump is effective due to big space but monitoring water level drives me crazy. Really miss my OHF setup. :embarrassed:
