The genus Vieja has for a long time being considered synonym of Theraps. A recent revision has brought nomenclature changes to fish in the genus. Most fish used for hybridizing (i.e. P. synspillus) have been assigned to genus Paraneetroplus (http://www.fishbase.org/Nomenclature/ValidNameList.php?syng=Paraneetroplus&syns=&vtitle=Scientific+Names+where+Genus+Equals+%3Ci%3E Paraneetroplus%3C%2Fi%3E&crit2=contains&crit1=EQUAL). All representatives of the genus have a low set mouth with flat teeth that have only one apex.

The remainder previous Vieja have gone to the former synonym Theraps (http://www.fishbase.org/Nomenclature/ValidNameList.php?syng=Theraps&syns=&vtitle=Scientific+Names+where+Genus+Equals+%3Ci%3E Theraps%3C%2Fi%3E&crit2=contains&crit1=EQUAL). Sharing a slender body and a low set mouth with Paraneetroplus; Theraps' upper jaw central teeth have a second apex. Provided links have a list of assigned species at Fishbase.
